First steps en pointe: Here they are, finally up in their shoes! Pointe shoe work is restricted to the barre initially until students develop the necessary strength and skills to manage standing en pointe in the centre, without support. We’ll get those ribbons tucked in eventually 🎀

Getting pointe shoes ready: Usually, we sit together as a class and work through the process together, making mistakes and fixing them, and cheering each other on as we complete this rather arduous task. We’ve put elastics on the wrong spot and had to remove and re-sew, we’ve forgotten to seal the edges before sewing them on so they frayed and had to be re-done, we’ve cut ribbons too short (well, that was me actually) and had to remove and replace the ribbon, we’ve sewed ribbon on backwards (there is an up and a down; who knew?) and decided to leave them because it’s not really obvious…

Getting pointe shoes ready: All this sewing work is done by hand, and it’s really important to us that our dancers be the ones to do this work. It’s another step along the road to taking responsibility for their training. And besides, parents are super busy and they don’t need another task added to their list.

Once pointe or pre-pointe shoes are procured, it’s time to add the components that keep the shoe on the foot, and stabilize the ankle. Elastic and ribbon do a lot of heavy lifting here. There are many ways to sew on ribbons, but we’ve settled on a method that provides the security we’re looking for, and as the dancers continue in their pointe career, they will tweak the method to best suit their particular needs.

Most of our current pointe students began with demi-pointes, and we’re adding one more student to that list! Though Gabie’s didn’t end up having her size in stock, they were able to get them in before my next orthodontic appointment so I could pick them up!

Sometimes the journey to pointe includes a period of time using “training wheel” shoes called 𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘵 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘴, or 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘪-𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘴. Like pointe shoes, they have a formed "box" for the toes, but the shank (part under the foot) is softer than a pointe shoe. This shoe allows the student to get used to the tighter feel of pointe shoes, and help them build up the strength they’ll need when they finally go en pointe. Here's a whole bag of pre-pointe shoes from our fitting last spring. Most of our current pointe students started in soft-block shoes!

How it started… Each dancer’s feet are unique! The length of their toes, the shape of their arch, the width of their foot and the differences in sizes between the feet are just some of the factors that come into play when finding the right pointe shoe. Every pointe shoe brand and type caters to a certain set of characteristics, and it’s trial and error to find the right combination for each dancer. Sometimes a lot of trial and error!

When the day of our pointe-shoe fitting finally arrives, we bundle up and head to Barrie. The staff at Gabie’s Boutique give the students a rundown of how today’s pointe shoe fitting will progress. Here they’re discussing what a well-fitting shoe feels like, and how it might take some trial and error to find the right fit.
