FRONT COVERS & BACK STORYS #1
On my old courier route I used to pass this street sign that said
"Grand Opera Lane" but there was really no lane there or Opera House to speak of. In the days before Google I went to the library and did some research and apparently there WAS an Opera House there at one point where renowned actors like Sarah Bernhardt performed. I had just finished an eleven song album produced by Bob Wiseman of Blue Rodeo that had been turned down by every label in Toronto so we decided to put it out independently on cassette. I thought "Grand Opera Lane" might be a good title for it because I did feel a bit like a street sign without a street. About a year after we put it out, Bob sent it down to some folks he knew in LA and the doors started to open for me with at first a publishing deal then a record deal with Jimmy Iovine's Interscope label. The photo was taken by Doug McClellan. He was a friend of drummer Don Kerr (who was also a courier) So we all went down to Adelaide & Yonge to have our photo taken with the vintage sign and it was a good thing because the following week the city replaced it with a sign that just said "Grand Opera Ln", Gotta hand it to fate!
