So I decided to enter a design contest with my pattern I created yesterday!
I went with the deep teal background, because that’s what really catches my eye 🌊

If my design would happen to win, it would be on these stunning golden coil planners for the next year! How cool!

So after my stories yesterday, I felt accountable to follow through,
If you didn’t watch them, that’s ok! I don’t expect everyone to have time, but to summarize I challenged myself to take a step towards my dream of being a licensed fabric designer and actually put a fabric design on the internet

I designed a floral with four different background colour options, I named them (which is often the hard part) and I created the cover photo for creative market, AND I UPLOADED ALL FOUR OF THEM!!

I’m feeling very spring- ish today, so I paint in spring colours and florals

🌸I’m seeing a collection in this one page of doodles, I’d love to make this into a few different cohesive patterns

🌼 I’m working towards becoming a surface designer ( essentially make patterns for products that you see everywhere )
I love making pretty things that could be on a physical product

🪷 my goal is to become a licensed designer which basically means I get paid for my work to go on products, so get on board people, that’s where this train is heading 🚂

1. Make patterns
2. Make the collection
3. Make a portfolio
4. Pitch my work
5. Sign contract

We spent the past two month or so working in our unfinished basement to get our kids rooms ready,

After a ton of framing, drywalling, and painting, we got them in there, which means I get my very own home office after 4.75 years of working from the kitchen table, a downstairs unfinished space, my bedroom and the living room floor, I get my very own space 😍

It feels so good!!
The painting you see is the first “just for fun” painting I did in my new sketchbook which was my Christmas present to me, and has been sitting and waiting for me patiently 😁

Anywho, if anyone has a brilliant idea on how to hang a heavy weight, slightly curled paper on the wall without poking holes or damaging the paint, hit a girl up, cause fun tac does NOT hold, and all my pretty work ended up slowly falling off the wall 🫤

Hey I’m Janice, ….just Janice, or JJ 👀 JK

I don’t have a nickname, never have!

I’m the weirdo who started this whole art side biz thing I have going on here,

3 very obvious things about me
- I’m obsessed with coffee
- flowers are my fav!
- I love the colour pink

3 less obvious about me (unless you know me)
- I’m married to my life partner for 13 years
- we have 4 kids
- I LOVE potatoes 🥔

I kind of accidentally started this business almost 5 years ago,
I was pregnant with my #4 and I felt I had nothing for just me, so for Mother’s Day that year I received a watercolour set of paint and paper.
I so very quickly fell in love, and grew in my skill.

Then I started getting requests for paintings and cards from friends and family, so I thought to myself, “ this could be a great side hustle for during Covid”
I took a course on digitizing my art which was a huge learning curve, because I’m not a tech savvy person,
But
Turns out I’m pretty great at making a nice greeting card! And eventually stickers, prints, and more!
Fast forward to about 2 years ago I started printing everything in house, and about a year ago I took another course to learn repeating patterns, or seamless pattern design!

I did a couple of amazing collaborations with local business owners with this new skill,
- designed a small fabric collection
- a custom coffee sleeve for a coffee business
- and also designed more fabric patterns for individual sewists

I think through this whole journey, I’ve learned so much about myself that it’s already priceless to me, BUT I never thought it would become what it has. And for that I am grateful 🥲

This has given me a dream,
An opportunity to impact the community around me and beyond,
And to connect with more business minded women and entrepreneurs!

I love it, (except the taxes and paperwork)
This is the coolest thing and I hope I can continue doing this until it becomes my full time income 👏🏼👏🏼

All the projects I’m currently working on are top secret 🤫 so here’s some pretty floral birthday cards

Also I’m planning to make 3 t-shirt designs with my artwork on them in the near future… I came up with one 💣 design last night, anticipating having time and energy to pull two more decent ideas out from my thinking cap 🧢

And one landscape? 🌲

Not sure… anywho, I’ll get it yet,

Hooray, it’s another over marketed holiday coming your way, love day is almost here, the day where you are told to spend extra money on people that you love so that they know you love them, spending extra money on folded pieces of paper and pretty flowers and chocolates is 100% the way to go…. ( extra sarcasm dripping )

But in case you want to participate here’s my

no, I think it’s wonderful to have a day set aside where you are mindful and show extra love to the important people in your life but I’m a little against the over marketing and overspending on these “holidays”

But I still love presents too ( gifts are my love language) but I’m also woman soooooo… need I say more?

Hey 👋🏼 yep, I’m still here! It’s been awhile but that was intentional ☺️
I’ve taken the holiday’s to be more present, to take advantage of what time I had with my family.

I don’t have a recap reel for last year, half my photos and videos are backed up somewhere and I simply don’t have the energy or desire to put it together 😀
But I would like to bring this to light, 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

My word for last year was GRATITUDE
Absolutely ironic, because it was a HARD year, personally, with this business, and just in general.
And yet that word was with me, and I just kept thinking of the things that I am grateful for despite the HARD.
Cancer diagnosis’s came to of not one but two very important women in my immediate family, markets were more work and less income, and I felt less aligned with my goals for most of this year.

BUT, that’s not the end of the story.
The Cancer won’t win, the goal will re-align, and the markets will bounce back.
I am not done trying yet.
And there were so many WINS too!!

This year is going to bring a lot of change,
I have some REALLY fun collaborations coming with more local businesses, a VERY exciting announcement coming down the pipeline and of course more beautiful art and pattern designs!

Things you can expect are
- genuine content
- small business life
- new products (hello cute t-shirts)
- and zero markets for this girl ✌🏼

Here’s to following what I think is right for IA right now, for my family, and yeah!

I think my word for 2024 is going to be a combo of freedom/fearless

Freedom of the “shoulds”
And fearless of “failures”

Let’s go for the big dreams shall we?
