ARTIST FEATURE: Rod Lee - Woodwork..
"I was in the lumber business most of my life, and when I retired to Cortes I continued my passion for wood by creating bird houses, multi use boxes and tables out of Western Red Cedar sourced from small sawmills on the island. The various pieces are from offcuts which I rework to find usable pieces of wood to make into my creations. I have made many commission pieces and am open to inquiries."

[email protected]..
MEET THE MAKER: Rod has already worked his Craft Shop days for the season, some of the busiest to date! You can meet him in person at the Friday Market in Manson's Hall or Saturday Market at the Gorge Marina.

And of course Rod has a wonderful display of birdhouses, storage boxes, trays, tablet and smartphone holders and more at the Craft Shop Co-op in Squirrel Cove.
We are open 11am-4pm daily through September 10, 2026..

ARTIST FEATURE: Maureen Bader..
Maureen Bader is a self-taught artist who has painted for more than 20 years. Maureen paints in a contemporary representational style with a focus on wildlife and west coast themes, expressive color and a contemplative feel.

For Maureen, painting is a way of communicating her response to the perceptual moment, not simply of seen shapes and colors, but to what draws her to the scene.

"To paint is to communicate emotions. To have my art touch the core of my work’s viewers means I have conveyed an emotion suggesting the human condition, and in doing so have succeeded as an artist."

Maureen's painting, "Dance to the Sea," was a recent finalist in an art competition https://faso.com/boldbrush/winner/428479

ARTIST FEATURE: Jan Boas of Bay House Designs..
"I became a fiber artist later in life. In grade seven I had a sewing teacher who did more discouraging than encouraging. I decided right then and there sewing was not for me. Fast forward to 26 years, when we bought our home in Whaletown. It needed curtains, pillows etc so I bought my first sewing machine and decided to teach myself. I made my first quilt about 25 years ago and have made many quilts for friends over the years.

I have a love of colour and fabrics that get my imagination going. I enjoy dying my own fabric when I have time. I joined the Cortes Craft shop 20 years ago making napkins, placemats and bags for the shop. I have also done some commission pieces.

When I’m not hiking or kayaking with my husband, dogs and friends, you will find me in my studio surrounded by colorful fabric."

ARTIST FEATURE: .pirate
We're thrilled to have Emmanuel join the Co-op this year!..
Emmanuel got started with leatherwork through punk rock, and began hammering metal after buying a forge on whim. He is a merchant mariner from Newfoundland and spent 7 years going around the world. Many of his rope and iron creations are made with boat life in mind.

Fate brought him to Cortes, where he continues working with materials that will beat the test of time..
MEET THE MAKER: Emmanuel will be in the Craft Shop on July 20+30 | Aug 17..

ARTIST FEATURE: Meredith Bill of Bareroot ..
Bareroots creations stem from the inspiration of raw materials found in nature and on farms. From hide tanning, basket weaving, and botanical skincare, each creation is unique and made slowly with intention.

My passion for craft started with my first travels ten years ago, as a way to keep my hands busy while exploring new places. Since 2023, my work has taken on a bigger role in my life when I moved to a remote, boat-access-only island where I can expand my creativity away from the distractions of the world...
MEET THE MAKER: Meredith will be in the Craft Shop Co-op on July 19 | Aug 29+30..

"I am happiest when I can create something with my hands, whether working in the garden or making crafts with natural materials.

Ever since I was a little kid and could hold knitting needles, I loved knitting. So a lot of my creations are knitted.

I also like to explore and try out new things."
