“Paralyzed with Gold”, is how Emily Dickenson describes the artist dropping his pencil because the sunset is too magical to capture with words or paint. Yet it’s something that we artists feel the urge to capture, even if impossible. As I walked alone, along the boardwalk running through the marsh at Rissers Beach I’d stopped to watch the most spectacular summer sunset over Petite Rivière. It’s these kinds of spectacles that we feel the urge to share as artists. We can’t keep something like this to ourselves.

Looking for a title, I discovered that this little body of water is called Mad Brook. How fun!

Melmerby Beach

Sometimes I leave the South Shore to go back home to the beach I where I spent my childhood in Nova Scotia. This is Melmerby Beach on the Northumberland Straight where the water is a little bit warmer. Seeing this sunset on the road leading to the parking lot reminds me of our summer evening picnics, cooking hotdogs on the habatchi and drinking Pop Shoppe pop, often warm and full of sand. Ahh! Summertime on the beach, there’s nothing like it. It’s incredible how our memories can be so colorful.

Memory Beach is another in my series of mixed media on birch panels. It is currently available at in Lunenburg, NS.

Every winter I like to take a drive out to Stonehurst, Nova Scotia. During the summer you’ll see lots of tourists and kayakers but during the winter this special place becomes a quiet magical scene with its ice watery blue reflections.

Stonehurst Glow is another in my series of watercolor, colored pencil and cold wax paintings on birch panels. I used metallic watercolor in this one so it actually shimmers.

This is 11”x14” and framed in natural oak and you’ll find it at in Lunenburg NS.

Morning in the marshes, bursting with life. I came across this beautiful spot riding my bicycle along the Bay to Bay trail between Lunenburg and Mahone Bay, in Nova Scotia. It’s so pretty you can’t help but stop and take a moment to breathe.

I’ve been working on birch panels for my new paintings. In this piece I was able to encourage the wood grain to become water by staining the birch with watercolor. I love how it worked.

Bat to Bay Marsh is another of my new pieces available at .

Just sit with me for a minute and take a look at this painting. Do you feel a sense of calm wash over you? That’s the magic of this place. It’s just good for your soul.

This is Bachman’s Beach. When I look at this I also hear kids laughing because it’s a favorite spot for families in the summer. The water is a bit warmer out on Second Peninsula, Nova Scotia and you often see sailboats catching the breeze.

Backman’s Beach is part of a new series of paintings available at in Lunenburg, NS

I’ll never stop being inspired to create art inspired by the beauty that surrounds us on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Over the past few months I’ve created a new series of small landscapes that are now available at in Lunenburg, NS. All are 11x14 inches, watercolor, colored pencil and wax on birch panels and are framed in natural oak. Pictured is a lovely field of wildflowers near Cherry Hill beach.

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”

Life has been stressful lately and it can be easy to get lost in the gloominess but how blessed am I that I can spend my time creating beautiful things that may add a little bit of joy to someones else’s world.

These little flower paintings are made with watercolors, some glittery ✨, colored pencils and wax on birch panels. They are now available at lovely little flower shop in Bridgewater, NS.

Yaaaay! I’m finally working in my summer studio aka my front porch. It felt like the middle of August yesterday with temperatures around 30C! I only got to work for a little while before I was reminded that it’s still very much spring. I have a nesting cardinal about 5 feet away from my table and heard some spirited peeping. I’m happy to announce the birth of at least 3 little cardinal babies! 😍 I quietly packed up and moved back inside so I wouldn’t disturb the new mama. Swipe to see mama and her fuzzy babies! I’ll try to get some toddler pics soon. 😊
