I’ve come across a few accounts of small scale, artisan paint makers making mineral paints and WOW they inspired me. Incorporating components from the places I paint just feels right.

I’m starting with charcoal that has washed up on the beach for a couple of reasons.

It’s readily available. It’s relatively inert, so I feel I can handle it safely (especially compared to some of the raw pigments I handled in art school. Yikes.).

Since I’ve been painting fires lately it also makes thematic sense.

I usually mix my blacks instead of keeping black paint around, since mixed blacks tend to have a more interesting character. Usually a base of Payne’s grey and burnt umber tinted with tones from the rest of the painting. So I’m really interested to see how this carbon black works, and whether any of that shimmer carries through.

Well, I’m off to find some gum Arabic. Stay tuned for step 2.

Painting fire with water: a violent sky erupts above Spallumcheen.

I started painting this year after putting my brushes down for 15 years. I made a commitment to paint with the seasons, pretty or not, in an effort to stay focused and present. As I painted the minimalist peace of winter, the grit giving way to vibrancy throughout spring, and the warm light of June nights, I kept thinking ahead to fire season. What would it feel like to paint August? A breath of heavy hot air, the tension between perfect, childlike days and disaster?

Painting fire with water. More of my journey documenting the Okanagan fire season through art.

It’s uncomfortable and eerie that the smoke can be beautiful. Here, it reflects on Okanagan Lake. Violent oranges and milky mauves against a bright blue summer sky, the uncanny contrast that happened when the fire was new and smoke hadn’t yet blurred the hills a cigarette blue.

It’s far from my first fire season in the Okanagan. I’ve been here for 10 years now, and most of the summers have been scarred with fire. It’s my first time documenting it through art.

The Bradley Creek Fire came hard and fast, and my heart goes out to all the families who have lost their homes.
