CUT MY ART INTO PIECES this is my last resort 🤘IYKYK

In my quest to create the perfect watercolour Christmas decoration, I stumbled upon something completely different.

Watercolour is notoriously fickle. A small mistake can ruin an entire painting, with no going back. Even if you’re skilled, you’ll end up with a pile of failed paintings (me too) and no idea what do do with them.

Mama didn’t raise a girl to waste at $4 per page. So turn it over, try again. And if that doesn’t work, cut it into pieces and create these precious little unexpected gems.

Debuting at a holiday market near you this November 🌲💕

Spent a spectacular fall afternoon capturing source photos on the Salmon Trail. I’ve been watching the birches waiting for the moment they turn and they did not disappoint.

When I saw the call from Gallery Vertigo for spooky art for their October window display, I knew I had something hiding somewhere.

This is one of my very first watercolours. I took the source photo on winter solstice last year while walking on the Salmon Trail in Lumby after dark. A few days later I got a watercolour set under the tree which started this whole journey returning back to art.

Is it my best work? No. But does it have the perfect witchy vibes for right now? Yes.

And celebrating first tries is special too.

Come paint with me! Today I’m making a misty forest watercolour ornament with the help of transparent watercolour ground.

It takes a few days to prep the ornament bases. They need a light sand and three thin coats of the watercolour ground to develop the absorbent surface needed for watercolour.

Once you start painting, really rich pigmented paint makes a big difference on a transparent surface. Here I’m using white gauche and Payne’s Gray watercolour. Payne’s Gray is one of my favourite colours. It is that perfect blue-grey for stormy skies that blends beautifully with other pigments for natural feeling landscapes.

The final product gets two coats of glossy archival varnish to protect the surface and make the colours pop.

I fully forgot to film the part where I painted the trees. Oops. I’m going to keep experimenting with different ornament designs and next time I’ll film the whole thing! Follow for more ❤️

🔴 Sold! This delicate little lavender garden in a gorgeous reclaimed vintage frame went home with a collector in Calgary.

It’s an imaginary landscape that I painted as I was planning a new garden inspired by the natural prairie gardens of Piet Oudolf. I was thinking about the morning light coming through the trees with a coffee in hand on a slow day at my new house.

Letting go of an original painting is always emotional and this one was tough since it’s so personal. But thankfully I still have prints to enjoy! If you’re heartbroken too, they’re on my Etsy store.
