It’s a great time to look at art!!
Jan dropped off three new original paintings. These won’t last long….

Jan Walker-Roenisch began drawing at a very early age, and had her first commissions in the 60’s, at age 14, doing pencil portraits of bands for a pop music magazine in California. She studied Scientific Illustration in Prescott College in Arizona and illustrated a few books.
She began working and playing polo in the 70’s and married Rich Roenisch, an artist and polo player, in 1980. They now live outside of Longview, Alberta, and have a full-time business with Rich’s sculptures. They complete the wax and metal work themselves in a shop at home. Walker-Roenisch’s main focus in paintings has been commissioned oil portraits, with the subject matter often of horses.

Amber and I met in the shop on a cold winter day last November. She didn’t tell me in that visit what a talented accomplished artist she is, but mentioned she does some painting….. ♥️

This says a lot about the kind of person she is and I am so excited to get to know her better.

Please welcome New Artist Amber Schmidt to Brass Buffalo Trading Post. We are honoured to showcase Amber’s incredible work here in Longview.

Being a rodeo Mom, mother of a really great bronc rider ….. I was excited to read the inspiration for this series. Anyone who follows rodeo knows C5 stock.

Bucking Horse Series;

In the spring of 2025, I spent the afternoon with Tyson Cardinal of the C5 Rodeo Company photographing the ranch's bucking stock mares and foals. I gathered reference images for a series of paintings exploring these remarkable horses and the next generation of rodeo athletes they are raising.

World-class bucking horses are the product of generations of selective breeding, exceptional horsemanship, and meticulous care. Valued as both elite athletes and breeding stock, they represent bloodlines carefully developed to produce the power, agility, and instinct that define the sport.

While the public often associates bucking horses with power, intensity, and explosive athleticism, my primary goal was to reveal a side that is rarely seen. Away from the lights, crowds, and competition, these horses spend much of their lives in quiet pastures, raising foals and forming strong maternal bonds. Watching mares nurture, protect, and guide their young offered a striking contrast to the spirited athletes they are known to be.

This series celebrates both realities, the strength and spirit of these extraordinary animals, and the tenderness, stewardship, and generations of care that shape them long before they ever enter the arena.

Stop by Brass Buffalo Trading Post to experience these beautiful originals in person. Whether you’re an art collector or simply appreciate the beauty of the West, we know you’ll fall in love with Amber’s work.

Charles M. Russell was one of the greatest artists of the West. Through his paintings and sculptures, he preserved the stories of cowboys, Indigenous Peoples, buffalo, wildlife, and the rapidly changing frontier. His work wasn’t just art—it became a visual history of a way of life that might otherwise have been lost.

We have the stunning limited Pendleton blanket featuring Charlie Russell’s tribute to the buffalo and his relationship with the Blackfoot people. Be sure to follow our page so you’ll know the moment it hits our shelves!

Known as the “Cowboy Artist,” Charles M. Russell (1864–1926) captured the spirit of the North American West like few others. His paintings and sculptures preserved the stories of cowboys, Indigenous peoples, wildlife, and the disappearing frontier with remarkable authenticity and respect.
Many of Russell’s adventures brought him through southern Alberta and Montana. He spent time with ranchers, cowboys, and Indigenous communities throughout this region, including ties to the historic Stampede Ranch near Longview.

His firsthand experiences in our country gave him a deep appreciation for the landscapes, people, horses, and buffalo that continue to shape our history today.

Stop in this week and discover why Charlie Russell’s legacy continues to inspire generations.
