What a beautiful day of art, storytelling, textiles and community! đź–¤

I had such a wonderful time collaborating with Oddside Arts for the launch of Beyond the Soil at the Scarborough Museum.

Watching people of all ages sit down, play with colour, fabric and texture, and create something completely their own is always my favourite part of facilitating. There is something powerful about putting materials on a table and simply giving people permission to CREATE.

And Beyond the Soil is so much bigger than one afternoon.

The installation celebrates Black creativity, connection, pattern-making and storytelling—and seeing how all of these individual stories have been transformed throughout the Scarborough Museum is beautiful.

If you missed the launch, go check out the Beyond the Soil installation at Scarborough Museum! Take your time with it. Look at the patterns. Look at the details. Think about the stories we carry with us and the ones we leave behind.

A little artist merch celebration today! 🎉

One of my iPhone 16 Plus Tough Cases just sold to a buyer right here in Toronto, featuring my “Pride Is A Riot!” — full of colour, texture, movement and bold storytelling.

I love seeing my art move into everyday life, not just on walls, but in the hands, homes and routines of people who connect with it. That’s the beauty of artist merchandise: you get to carry a piece of the work with you.

I’m excited to be coming back to Beyond the Soil — this time to share space, stories and textiles with community. 🖤

On Saturday, October 3, I’ll be at the Scarborough Museum facilitating Rooted in Cloth: Textile Story Squares, a hands-on textile collage workshop as part of the Beyond the Soil Exhibition Launch with Oddside Arts and Toronto History Museums.

For me, fabric has never been just fabric. It carries memory. Culture. Home. Family. Movement. The pieces of ourselves we bring from one place to another.

During the workshop, we’ll use colour, texture and pattern to create textile art that tells a story without needing words. You don’t have to be an artist. You don’t need to know how to sew. Just come ready to play, create and see where the cloth takes you.

And yes—there will be food, giveaways and good community vibes, so come spend part of your Saturday with us.

Welcome Home, Welcome Here. 🏠🧵

It was incredibly special to return to Lakeshore Arts and see the Community Quilt we created together at the inaugural Mimico Arts Jam now hanging in its home.

During my Pieces of Home workshop, community members of all ages were invited to create textile houses while reflecting on what home, safety and belonging mean to them. Each little house carries its own personality and story, but when brought together, they become a neighbourhood—a reminder that community is something we create collectively.

The workshop also opened space to think about homelessness and the importance of recognizing and supporting the shelter and people experiencing housing insecurity within our own communities. A home is more than four walls. It can mean safety, dignity, connection and the knowledge that you belong somewhere.

Seeing all of these individual creations brought together into one finished quilt reminds me exactly why I believe in community art: our individual stories matter, but there is power in seeing what we can create together.

Dominic Kalipersad The National Pledge of Trinidad and Tobago was written by Marjorie Padmore, a prominent local musician, educator, and pioneer in educational school broadcasting.

Following T&T's attainment of independence from Britain on August 31, 1962, there was a strong push to instill civic pride and national identity in the younger generation.

Padmore composed the Independence Pledge specifically for school children.

Prior to Independence, the government held a competition for a national anthem. Patrick S. Castagne’s "Forged from the Love of Liberty" won the competition, while Padmore’s entry, "God Bless Our Nation", came second and was designated as the National Song.

Padmore then channeled her dedication to the nation’s youth by penning the National Pledge.

As the first female head of the Ministry of Education's School Broadcasting Unit, Padmore utilised radio and school programmes to weave the pledge into the daily lives of students across the twin islands.

She was later awarded the Humming Bird Medal (Gold) by the government for her contributions to nation-building and the education system.
