Today, we honour Emancipation Day. ❤️🖤💛💚

For many across the African Diaspora, Emancipation Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is a reminder of the resilience, resistance, and sacrifices of those who dreamed of freedom long before they were able to experience it.

As the child of immigrants, born in Canada but proudly raised in Trinidad and Tobago, I carry the richness of two places that have shaped who I am. My Caribbean roots taught me that our history lives in our music, our food, our language, our Carnival, our spirituality, and our communities. It lives in the stories passed down through generations and in the joy we continue to choose despite the struggles our ancestors endured.

Emancipation is not just about looking back. It is about continuing to create spaces where our voices, our cultures, and our stories are celebrated. As an artist and community facilitator, I see every workshop, every conversation, and every piece of art as another opportunity to honour that legacy.

Today, I celebrate those who came before us, those who continue the work today, and those who will carry it forward tomorrow.

Happy Emancipation Day. 🇹🇹🇨🇦

I don’t usually accept commissions, but this one felt especially meaningful. 💙

I’m honoured to be creating a portrait of a beloved family pet as a birthday gift for my friend Amanda. Today is Day One—preparing the round canvas, building the colour foundation, and beginning the careful process of turning a treasured photograph into a lasting tribute.

There is something deeply intimate about painting an animal who has been loved as family. I’m approaching this piece with tenderness, patience, and respect for the memories it carries.

Stay tuned as this tribute takes shape.

There is something incredibly moving about seeing where a piece begins its next chapter.

Laura and Jean-Raphaël Heckly recently shared this beautiful photo of Oju Olorun V from my Eye of God Collection in its new home, and my heart is so full. Seeing it thoughtfully framed and surrounded by the artworks and objects they love is a reminder that art doesn't end when it leaves the studio—it begins a new relationship.

Thank you, Laura and Jean-Raphaël, for welcoming Oju Olorun V into your home and for sharing this beautiful moment with me. Knowing this piece will be lived with, reflected upon, and enjoyed for years to come is one of the greatest gifts an artist can receive.

Wishing this work many years of conversation, joy, and quiet reflection in its new home. ❤️
