Click Track or Feel?

When you’re tracking a Punk or Hardcore record, do you prefer to work to a click—or let the band breathe and ebb and flow naturally like the classic records did?

When I first started recording, I was working to tape, so a click wasn’t nearly as accessible or flexible as it is in a modern DAW. That limitation actually forced me to develop my ears and become much more critical during tracking. If something wasn’t right, we had to fix it before moving on.

These days, I’ll often track to the grid. It gives me the flexibility to cut, nudge, and tighten performances when needed without necessarily sacrificing the feel of the performance.

But there’s always a balance. Punk and Hardcore have a certain energy that can sometimes get lost if everything is perfectly locked to the grid.

So what’s your approach?

Do you always track to a click? Do you prefer the natural push and pull of a live performance? Or do you use a combination depending on the song or band?

And if you use a click, how much do you allow yourself to edit afterward?
