This Saturday I will be at Wayzgoose in the Grimsby Art Gallery. Wayzgoose is an annual book fair where you can satisfy all your bookish desires, including buying paste paper made by me! If you go, be sure to say hi. I'll be at the Canadian Bookbinding and Book Arts Guild's table. See you there!

This drawing was begun in 2006 when I had a one year old son and a 4 year old daughter. It was finished in 2019. By that time I had two more children and some very full years.
The thing that really held me back was the snake. I tried different ways of drawing the scales, but wasn't happy. In between the busy family, thinking about what to do, and different attempts, I put it aside for a couple years. When I finally pulled it out again to git-r-done I was shocked to see that I had already completed the snake! That was a pleasant surprise (and a reminder to spend more time drawing rather than thinking).

This is "Journeyman's Wages" from 2005. It was my first landscape sort of. Landscapes aren't particularly interesting to me so I stuck in myself holding a drawing of my mom pregnant with me. I'm sure one could come up with wild interpretations of this piece.

The cupped hands held close to this man’s body represent his dreams and desires for a home, dreams that are precious and worthy of protection. The hole represents the absent physical reality of his dreams. The tension between the hands protecting and a shadowy hole portrays the psychological, emotional, and physical suffering caused by poverty. The hole draws attention to the drawing surface, a feature which is common in my artwork, and is a subtle reminder to the viewer that the artwork is my detailed but limited depiction of being unhoused.

Here are the paste papers that I will be using for my next collage. Any guesses as to how it will look?
