Maud and Mabel Contemporary art gallery in Hampstead Village, London.

Founded in 2012 by Karen Whiteley in Hampstead Village, London, Maud and Mabel is a carefully curated space. It unites contemporary aesthetic with ancient craft in every guise from ceramics and wood to glass, textiles and precious metals and stones. These pieces are rooted in shibumi, an aspect of Japanese aesthetics that balances simplicity and complexity with perfection and imperfection. Where elegant forms boast rough tactile qualities and intricately engineered artistry is performed with refined subtlety. Alongside showcasing a wide selection of works, Maud & Mabel works closely with pioneering artists from around the globe to create special collections, exhibitions and collaborations that honour both the artist and spectator in the gallery and online, as well as supplying and working with designers on major projects.

A considered gathering of ceramics by Enriqueta Cepeda, Hannah Blackall-Smith, Paul Philp and Tetsuya Ozawa, bringing together contemporary British, Scandinavian and Japanese ceramic traditions in a quiet and harmonious composition.

Each vessel carries its own distinct character, shaped by a rich diversity of processes, materials and gestures. From the subtle, tactile surfaces of kofuki to the unpredictable marks of smoke firing and the expressive qualities of hand-building, these works celebrate the beauty of both process and imperfection. Organic silhouettes, nuanced textures and earthy tones reveal individuality, sitting together in a considered dialogue where each piece is distinct in its own right yet contributing to a cohesive whole.

GAKU NAKANE

_______________

Gaku Nakane has been practising in ceramics for around ten years, and has already seen him amass a number of arts and ceramics awards, such as the Kikuchi Biennale XI Grand Prize. His work evolves daily in its intricacies, from relic-like finishes to complex, layered forms.

Inspired by the landscape surrounding his idyllic countryside home and workshop, Gaku’s youth spent playing amongst natural environments is a pervading conceptual exploration within his work. His works exhibit a sustained focus on the palettes and textures of nature; close observation of the surfaces of trees, rocks and other materials has shaped his artistic identity. Combining characterful silhouettes with intricate, tactile surfaces, Gaku wishes to explore ‘ambiguities of boundaries’ between the handmade and the naturally formed.

For Gaku, a sense of temporality is intrinsic to his work. He is drawn to nature due to the proximity it gives to a material feeling of time that one can experience, something that is embodied and felt. From the forms of rocks changing as they tumble down a flowing river, or large fallen trees carved with cuts and bruises: their appearance is a reflection of time, and Nakane delights in the stories, emotions and experiences that are reflected and embedded through their shape and form.

IVE POLACHOVA

_______________

London-based ceramicist Iva Polachova specialises in tableware and decorative vessels, and brings her works to life through their fluid and tactile surfaces. Iva draws inspiration from Constantin Brancusi’s notion of capturing an intangible essence, as well as Paul Klee’s belief in an artist’s innate relationship with nature.

She honours the nature of the clay by working with unglazed porcelain, fascinated by the strength that its sensuous and fragile appearance belies. From the highly refined to the coarse, Iva also practices across many types of clay, continually experimenting with their tactile nature.

A white glaze’s ability to reveal the foundation material whilst emphasising form and texture makes it an integral finish in Iva’s work. Iva’s prioritization of the creative process and rhythm of making results in pieces that are imbued with a sense of balance, clarity and stillness.

VICTORIA MEADOWS

_______________

Based in the Cotswolds, Victoria Meadows channels her lifelong fascination with ancient and often primitive ceramic forms into her practice. She places great value on these creative influences spanning other cultures and ages, considering her work as a continuation of these creative journeys, thus allowing her thoughts to be rooted in historical pottery whilst moving into new directions.

Victoria develops her forms through coiling, pinching and refining the clay into shape, finessing the line of the curves as the pot grows. Her process of refinement is highly tactile and intentional in its minimal use of tools. It acts as a celebration of clay: embracing its beautiful characteristics, leaving rips and tears, indentations from fingerprints and marks of the making process.

A mixture of primitive wood firing practices have led Victoria to discover ways of finding colour and abstract markings, with natural adornments forming from her use of foraged wood and plant life in the firing process. Victoria says that the precarious nature of this style of firing brings enormous vitality and allows her to capture the essence of a fleeting moment in time, etching it onto a surface.

ANNETTE LINDENBERG & WATARU HATANO

_______________

Annette Lindenberg’s pieces are unmistakable in their balance between delicate softness and jagged roughness, sculpted in the technique of kurinuki. Lying at the core of her practice is a love for experimentation, evident in her diverse use of hand mixed clay and experimental glazes. Setting her apart from her contemporaries, Annette uses an ethereal silver droplet overglaze, which forms beads of silver in varying forms, as if perspiring on the ceramic surface.

In an entirely contrasting medium, Hatano Wataru continues to develop his use of washi, pioneering the use of the material in creating furniture, crockery, wallpaper and flooring. He cemented his skills in the practice while studying at Kurotani Washi, and is now a highly acclaimed washi craftsman and papermaker. Hatano’s innovative use of washi as a construction material is enabled by applying additional Japanese materials to its surface to imbue it with additional properties. Hatano combines a deep understanding of tradition with a contemporary approach, making his works, in all their different forms, so in demand.

Annette Lindenberg’s skillful carving of kurinuki pieces is part of her meditative and intuitive making process tied to the Japanese aesthetic theory of wabi-sabi. She finds solace in seeking perfection in imperfections, a quality embodied by the soothing and peaceful balance in dichotomies resolved in her pieces. Despite their juxtaposing styles, both artists’ works evoke an intuitive sense of serenity and resonance.

Lat chance to visit our current exhibition ‘In Balance’, closing today at 5.30pm. The display unites contemporary craft artists working in wood, metal, and ceramics, on a central theme of balance as both a physical act and an aesthetic pursuit. Through this curation, we have explored themes of fragility, weightlessness, and technical skill, and are honoured to have shared this collection of works by both current and new artists.
Each piece in the exhibition demonstrates a perfection of craft through their attentiveness to material, form, and intentional balance. Artists Barbara Gittings, Koichi Onozawa, Emelie Abrahamsson, Jayne Armstrong, and Ann Van Hoey invite us to dwell in the space where stability and fragility meet.

From Emelie Abrahamsson’s remarkable hand shaping and Ann Van Hoey’s origami-like sculptures, to Jayne Armstrong’s delicate and weightless wooden vessels, the works we have welcomed into this display are so technically refined that balance is no longer just a condition, but an expression of artistry.

EMELIE ABRAHAMSSON | IN BALANCE | 10 – 24 SEPTEMBER

For ‘In Balance’, we are pleased to welcome an exciting addition of five works by Emelie Abrahamsson, all united in form and balance, varied in colour and scale. Focusing on the traditional practice of forming clay into soft, organic shapes, Emelie produces monumental yet quietly elegant works.

Her vessels are perfectly balanced in form, rising from a delicate, narrow foot before expanding outward into a generous, rounded body, before soon folding back into itself toward a restrained opening at the crown. A soft, deliberate indentation interrupts the symmetry, introducing a subtle wave-like movement that animates the form without disturbing its composure. The finish of her pieces carries a remarkable softness and depth, its muted hues responding gently to changing light while maintaining a quiet connection to the landscape from which they originate.

Emelie Abrahamsson is based in Hönö, an island in the Swedish archipelago, and has been working with ceramics since 2018. Today, she creates modern ceramic pieces combining art, design and functionality at her own company, mliceceramics. She says: “I love working with natural textures and large shapes, but what inspires me the most is the history and soul of the ceramic tradition. I am thankful to be a part of the ceramic tradition.”

ANN VAN HOEY | IN BALANCE | 10 – 24 SEPTEMBER

We are pleased to present a new and exceptional collection of works in stoneware, bronze and earthenware by Ann Van Hoey for ‘In Balance’. With enticingly smooth surfaces and a satisfying weight, Ann’s works are perfectly balanced, often utilising bold monochromatic colour patterns. Through their form, colouring, and finish, she creates technically impeccable vessels that reveal her creativity and precision as a ceramicist.

The renowned Belgian ceramic artist obtained her degree in Ceramics from the Institute for Arts and Craft in Mechelen in 2006, an education that followed her Masters in Applied Economic Sciences in 1979. Influenced by this background, each piece by Ann begins as a mathematical equation, hand-built by rolling out perfectly flat, thin slabs, and moulded into one of several forms.

Once formed, the pieces are cut and reassembled into intriguing origami-esque sculptures. This process results in endlessly unique silhouettes with the perfect blend of soft, easy curves and crisp edges and folds. Their immaculate finishes capture and play with light in a remarkably unique way that leave their surfaces with a sheen akin to velvet. Through these subtle yet deeply-considered techniques, Ann celebrates well-executed design, while still producing final pieces that feel effortlessly poetic.

JAYNE ARMSTRONG | IN BALANCE | 10 – 24 SEPTEMBER

‘In Balance’ signifies a new and diverse collection from Jayne Armstrong, bringing together complex works in Oak, Eucalyptus, and Sycamore. In her pieces, Jayne explores the sculptural and aesthetic possibilities of traditional woodwork, experimenting with the ways the material moves and changes shape as it dries.

The pieces possess an exceptional weightlessness; incredibly thin to the touch and effortlessly balanced, whilst carrying a rich sense of story in their natural surfaces and her hand staining, marking, and painting. Each piece is intentionally unique and the outcome of multiple processes.

Jayne works primarily in fresh, green wood sourced locally, thus allocating each piece a story that is rooted in time and place, yet located within a broader cultural and historical context. Experimental and exploratory, her work draws from art history, design history and philosophy; a dialogue between material, concept, technology and technique.

KOICHI ONOZAWA | IN BALANCE | 10 – 24 SEPTEMBER

We are pleased to introduce a new collection of exceptional works by Koichi Onozawa for ‘In Balance’. Seeking to express the integration of primitive beauty in modernity through their forms, Koichi’s works are poetically reminiscent of the ancient Yayoi pottery of Japan.

Koichi grew up in Tokyo, and graduated from a prestigious ceramic school in Tajimi City in 2008 with a degree in ceramic design. Following this, he moved to rural Nakagawa in 2011, where he still practices today. Here, he started creating more functional ware, influenced by the local rice and pottery trade. His ceramic work thrives on the belief that the equality of people is connected by sensation and emotion when perceiving beautiful objects.

His work achieves a deep understanding of technique through his use of Tōtai Shikki, which involves applying layers of lacquer to a fired ceramic piece. Through multiple layers of decorative slips, successive polishing, and final coatings of lacquer, he achieves a complex and expressive finish through subtle changes in colour and texture. The remarkable forms of the folding clay bodies demonstrate the hand of the maker even further, as the vessels seem to impossibly balance upon a single point.
