A quote from the Astor Theatre Manager, Kathryn Killam about the Winds of Change production of Midsummer.com, which opens tonight at the Astor...

"I hate to give anything away... like the fab costumes, however sometimes you just have to get the word out. These kids are fantastic. The script is dense.... yet it rolls off their tongues. The timeless story of the complexity of love and ego, thought to be the territory of older, experienced folks.... is charming, amusing and fresh in the hands of these young ones. There are some outstanding performances... some forces of natural talent to be reckoned with... some future leads in WoC productions and likely some will be seen on stages far from here.
In my role of manager and publicist, I've been encouraging people to "do some good"... to go see this play.... support our kids... bump up the ticket sales, but every time I get another glimpse of their rehearsals, I think the message is really more "do yourself some good".... go see this charming, delightful, well executed 'take' on Shakespeare. These amazing kids will take you outside of yourself for a night. They'll make you smile... make you laugh... make you wonder... and make you feel reassured that contrary to the news, not all teens are lost in the grip of a grey screen, interacting with the unreal. These youths are very engaged, very focused and today they'll be very excited about their first show tonight.
Andrew and I will be in the box office from 11am till showtime at 7:30
Drop in or call 354-5250 for tickets. Make their day... and yours."

Here's an adapted version of our last media release - so many to thank!

The Winds of Change Society’s production of the world’s longest running musical, Boublil and Schönberg’s Les Misérables, at the Astor Theatre, is now complete.

As the production team completes its wrap-up tasks, producer Jean Robinson-Dexter reflected on the experience. “For some of us, this journey began almost a year ago. Kristopher Snarby, our Jean Valjean and vocal/choral director, had been pursuing the rights to do this show for many years and when they finally became available, he and the board of the Winds of Change Society, leapt at the opportunity. Since that time, the core team of Kristopher, co-directors Susan Lane and Richard Comeau, and I have been joined by an incredibly talented group of people to put on the show that people over the last two weekends.”

Many people joined the team in leadership roles, including Sue Beaumont-Rudderham, who coordinated costumes and as the Society’s treasurer controlled the finances and Cameron Dexter lead the technical sound and lights team. Deborah Spartinelli and Rick Gilbert and their team are responsible for the versatile and evocative set, while Angela Purdue, Norma Lenco and Deb Sponagle-Taylor created, scavenged and magically produced prop pieces to suit the era of the production. Mena Evans and her make-up team of brand new Winds of Change volunteers created character looks that audiences won’t forget. Andre Haines leads a band of South Shore musicians playing the stirring score that so many will recognize. Jackie Leonard lead stage management, a key element to a good production. The production team also included Greg Tutty, who designed all promotional materials and the program and Phyllis Tutty, who made our program advertising campaign a success. Front of House volunteers was smoothly coordinated by Lin Conrad, Marsha Harding and Debbie and Kevin Page.

“Almost one hundred people auditioned to be part of this show in February,” said Robinson-Dexter, “and we ended with a cast of forty. These actors have such talent – I know we thrilled audiences with the voices, and laughed and cried, as we did, over the last few months.

We also want to say thank you to the community – to the businesses that came on board as corporate sponsors and those that took ads in our program; to South Queens Middle School and Liverpool Regional High School, for allowing us to use their facilities; and to our government funding partners. Finally, thank you to community members who donated materials and props or made a financial donations to the show, and who purchased tickets, we are very appreciative.”
