Profits provide bursaries to students continuing their post secondary education in the arts. The Bruce Peninsula Art Show was started in l967 by Vince Elliot, a Stokes Bay Summer resident. He was an Art Teacher in Wallaceburg, Ontario and taught art to a handful of his Stokes Bay neighbours, and decided to make a venue where their work could be displayed to the public. Over the years, as the Show
opened to other artists interested in entering, the Art Show was moved to a larger venue at the Bruce Peninsula District School in Lion’s Head. Artists must be permanent or seasonal residents from Bruce or Grey County to enter. In all of these years, there have only been 4 years the Show was not held. Roughly 26 years ago the Show committee decided that they could not do the job without more help to do the work, and there was no Show that year. Thankfully, a group of artists and locals who wanted to see the Show continue formed a new Art Show committee. Then, more recently, Covid shut it down 2 years in a row in 2020 and 2021. The show was also cancelled in 2022 because the parking lot was being upgraded at the school. In the beginning the show was held on the week leading up to the Civic Holi-day weekend and people purchasing works had to leave them until the end of the Show. These days the Show runs from Friday evening through the Civic Long weekend to the holiday Monday at 5 pm, and art can be taken at time of purchase. The new committee also started the Bursary Program which donates the prof-its from the show to grant bursaries to graduating students from Bluewater District School Board that are continuing in the Arts at the post secondary level. The number of artists has grown over the years, and both the exhibitors and the visitors greatly enjoy the event.
