📢 Call for Submissions: Women, Art & Political Change Juried Exhibition @ Kawartha Art Gallery, Lindsay 📢

Throughout history, women have played a vital role in expanding rights, advocating for change, building communities, and shaping our democratic landscape. Women, Art & Political Change invites artists to explore that legacy—and the many ways participation, representation, and collective action continue to shape our world today.

Through themes of democracy, advocacy, leadership, human rights, identity, protest, belonging, and community engagement, this juried exhibition will bring together works that challenge perspectives, commemorate achievements, inspire dialogue, and imagine a future where everyone has the opportunity to participate fully in civic and community life.

Artists across Ontario are invited to interpret the theme through personal experiences, historical narratives, contemporary issues, or imagined futures.

📅 Exhibition Dates: October 7 – December 19, 2026
📍 Kawartha Art Gallery, Lindsay
⏳ Deadline: September 28, 2026

A little creativity, a little colour, and a whole lot of community. 🎨🐦

Lynda H., a member of the Pickled Painters, was among the artists who helped bring the final Perch & Paint birdhouses to life.

With their creativity, the Pickled Painters helped decorate the last few birdhouses available, adding their own artistic touch to a project that supports youth arts programming at Kawartha Art Gallery. Thank you, Lynda and the Pickled Painters, for being part of it.

Initiated by the Lindsay Optimist Club, Perch & Paint brings local artists and the community together to invest in creativity and our community’s future. Because when we create, we connect. And when young people have opportunities to create, they are building more than art. They are building confidence, connection and possibility.

🎨 Bid on an original work of art.
🧠 Support youth creativity and well-being.
❤️ Invest in our community’s future.

Gallery Stories: Remembering Rod Malham

The next article in Kawartha Art Gallery’s Gallery Stories series looks back at Rod Malham, the Gallery’s fifth director.

Residents of Lindsay and the surrounding area who opened the Lindsay Daily Post in the late 1980s would have become familiar with Rod’s face. Bespectacled and bearded, and often impeccably dressed in a suit and tie, Rod had the look of an archetypal curator, or perhaps a university professor.

Forty years ago this summer, Rod began his tenure as The Lindsay Gallery’s fifth director. During its 50th anniversary year, Kawartha Art Gallery is looking back at the people and stories that helped shape the Gallery and the important role Rod played in establishing it as a vital part of Lindsay’s cultural community.

Art gives young people opportunities to explore, experiment, express and connect. Perch & Paint puts that idea into action, turning artist painted birdhouses into support for youth arts programming at Kawartha Art Gallery. 🎨🐦

Initiated by the Lindsay Optimist Club, Perch & Paint brings local artists and the community together to invest in creativity and our community’s future.

More than a birdhouse. A small investment in big possibilities.

Learn more about the artists behind the birdhouses.

Today’s Artist Spotlight features Optimist Member Bill Legere:

“I first wanted to create two complementary blue colours as background, and custom mixed until I achieved it. I then thought of a subject or theme. Birds for a bird house was my choice, but I wanted bright colours and decided that parrots poised and in flight would be my theme.”

🎨 Bid on an original work of art.
🧠 Support youth creativity and well-being.
❤️ Invest in our community’s future.
