Nutz Into The Future: Although it’s been alluded to, this will not be the end of improv in Lethbridge. Instead this fall will see a new beginning as alumni of the Drama Nutz begin to work as a part of Impromptou… the improv arm of Theatre Outré. Using the very best improvisers and performers that Lethbridge has to offer, Club Didi will play host to nights ranging from the short form shows Drama Nutz has long presented to the return of “Gomorrah”, the improvised soap opera that launched two years ago. Through this new company, improvisation will reach new heights and work to push the boundaries of what improv can be and what it can offer.

“No Way Out…” The first production of Impromptou… will be premiering this September as a part of the Lethbridge Fringe Festival. An original creation constructed by Drama Nutz Alumni (David Gabert, Erica Barr, Greg Wilson, Camille Pavlenko and Conner Christmas), the show seeks to explore the relationships and the extremes to which people will go when there is truly no escape from their surroundings.

So be sure to follow Theatre Outre on Facebook to keep up with all of the new and exciting improv opportunities as improv continues to be a key part of the Theatre Community in Lethbridge.

Countdown to Nutz: Just one final performer, and it’s unshocklingly the one who has been here for the longest, David Gabert. The founder of Drama Nutz, David has been around since the first time the word “nutz” was spelt with a “Z” all the way back in 2003. After moving to Lethbridge, he took the name with him and founded the troupe that has been around for the last decade. In that time David has worn many different hats, from a student to a tour guide to a bartender to a mental health administrator; he has gone from an awkward bachelor with horrible puns to the master of the dad jokes. Through it all Drama Nutz has been a constant. Now as he looks to the future as GM of Theatre Outré , it has come "Lethbridge’s Improv Empressario" to move on. Over the last ten years, David has made incredible memories of working with all the talented people who have come through Drama Nutz. So if you ever see him with his patented genteel smile that he is known for, chances are good that he’s reliving one of the many memories of the troupe- from Oscar Moment to taking on that brand new long form character- that have made him the man he is today.

With David, improv is more than a skill, it’s a life style. Whether parenting, planning events, or just just talking to people, the dynamic nature of improvisation allows him to adapt and respond to anyone and everything. With a passion for mental health and generally helping those around him, David will likely be found doing great things for years to come. So watch David keep improv alive as he launches Impromptou… - the improv arm of Theatre Outre- this fall with “No Way Out…” at the Lethbridge Fringe Festival.

Come on out and be a part of the final moments of the theatre company that brought the show to you with David and all the others in Drama Nutz: The Farewell Show tonight– June 24th- at 8 pm at Club Didi!

Countdown to Nutz: With only hours left until the big goodbye, it’s time to introduce our second last performer, Erica Bee. This mistress of music in all that she does, Erica has worked with the Drama Nutz for the last six years. Despite retiring from the troupe, she has come back in full force to be a shining star of Gomorrah and work with many of the others to create vivid shows in the community. Currently she is gearing up not only for this final show with the Drama Nutz, but for her final semester as a student, as she nears completion of her Education degree from the University of Lethbridge. Brining life and energy to all that she does, it is certain that the troupe would not have been as energetic without her enthusiasm for all things improv. From writing and developing murder mysteries, to creating new games. From darting forth to plan retreats with events that are sure to leave a mark, to taking comedies about the natural disasters and making them touchingly poignant, Erica embodies the very heart and soul of Drama Nutz.

Her appreciation for improv knows no bounds either, as she uses the ability to problem solve and adapt to everything in her life, students and friends alike. Fueled by the optimistic energy that only Hello Kitty can provide, Erica has no clue where life will take her, but we are certain that it will be full of many adventures and projects along the way. At this point she is excited to be working alongside Theatre Outré to create “No Way Out…”, a brand new improv show that will be premiering as part of Impromptou… at the Lethbridge Fringe Festival this coming September.

Come on out and witness the musical might of Erica as she raps up this troupe in Drama Nutz: The Farewell Show tonight – June 24th – at 8 pm at Club Didi!

Countdown to Nutz: Over the years, the musical talents of Drama Nutz have always been dependant on the select group of performers who are able to play an improvised tune. Whether it’s a pre-set irish diddy, or creating a tune in a genre that is pitched to them, our musicians are an integral part of the team that bring our shows to life. So where would we be in a farewell show without a musician to back us? Not only has Nick Bohle been a key member of the troupe over the last year, but as a talented musician he has underscored our performances, and pushed the boundaries of what Drama Nutz can do in the show.

We are very excited to announce that not only will the talents of Nick be accompanying us throughout the show, but he will be there to lay down some tunes before the show starts. So come on out and listen to the live music as you warm yourself up to say goodbye to the Nutz.

Come out early to Drama Nutz: The Farewell Show on Friday, June 24th at 7:30 pm and join us in enjoying the musical prowess of Nick, and the stick around for the rest of the show starting at 8:00 pm.

Nutz About History: Since they were the company that “brings the show to you”, Drama Nutz has always traveled on the road, whether it was to Fernie or Swift Current. So one might look at “The Daily Draught”, an improvised soap opera that took place at the Billiard Club as a part of the Edmonton Fringe Festival, as an extension of there usual services. However, this time not only was the run much longer, but this wasn’t a contracted gig, it was a labour of love with characters and setting created by the troupe in the weeks and months leading up to the show.

The Daily Draught followed the workers and several patrons of a local Edmonton pub, The Spoonful of Sugar, during the summer of ’95. With loveable and quirky characters, such as reluctant owner Tin Wesnewski (Greg Wilson) or the Irish exchange student turned server, Meaghan O’Hara (Camille Pavlenko), the cast brought the bar to life with a story that continue through each of the ten days of the festival. The story progressed quickly turning into twin love stories between Tin and Meaghan and that of Bobby McQuaid (Alisha VanWieren) and Britt-Annie Thompson (Emily Schoen). The characters as they came to life each day brought heart to the show, and with guest appearances from many others to bring the bar to life, it was a thrilling experience for all involved.

Experiences from this show have had a profound impact on the troupe in the last year, seeing performers taking their own strides towards creation pieces such as Emily, Brandon and Adam with LinkedImprov – currently playing at the Improv Series at Ignite! Festival– or as David, Camille, Greg and Erica work towards creating a brand new show, No Way Out that will premiering as part of Impromtou… - the improv division of Theatre Outre- at the Lethbridge Fringe Festival this fall. It’s a good reminder that in improv, even though each show is different, they all work to shape that which we create in the future.

So come down to where everybody knows your name and share a drink with the former staff of The Daily Draught at Drama Nutz: The Farewell Show, on Friday, June 24th at 8 pm at Club Didi. You'll be glad you came.

Countdown to Nutz: It is with great trepidation, that we announce this next performer, Brandon Eyck. A man who has proclaimed himself to be the undoing of the troupe. His story does run true, he became a member of the troupe in it’s last year, joining up to tackle “The Daily Draught”, Brandon was a key player in nearly all that the troupe did throughout the last year. From playing Mugshot Jones in Murder Mysteries to narrating slide shows, and kicking David out as the host at monthly improv shows and all the gigs in between, he even went on to guest star in the finale of Gomorrah and shows no signs of letting up. So what is the evil plan behind it all? The truth is we don’t know.

Some say that he is using improv to help prepare for the impending Rat-pocalypse, others say that his drive and leadership will allow him to raise from the ashes of this company a new one. One that uses his characters and humour to elevate him even further. What can be certain is that this performer will not be seen giving up improv anytime soon. Nor would we want that.

Come out and see Brandon’s improvised ending to Drama Nutz come to fruition in Drama Nutz: The Farewell Show at Club Didi, Friday June 24th at 8 pm.

Countdown to Nutz: One fateful day, our next performer Alli Price, found herself sitting at a coffee shop discussing the world of improv. Little did she know that that one meeting would change the course of her spare time… forever. From that audition, she double-doubled down on her improv experience and came straight to a rehearsal, and from there the rest is history. Within a few short weeks, Alli went from being the newest member of the troupe, to a seasoned performer throwing down with the best of them. Not only has she graced our stages, but been a part of many different productions, and even launched a promising stand-up career. We can only look forward to the heights the Alli will take her improv.

So how does this performer end up using this wide range of skills, in what we can only imagine to be one of the hardest gigs ever – dealing with children and adults who act worse than children at a swimming pool. That’s right this woman legitimately saves life with the power of improv! Something the rest of us can only aspire to do with the grace that she does. From quick reactions to her delightfully dry humour, Alli has brought a new zest to the stage in all that she does.

Come out and see Alli in action at Drama Nutz: The Farewell Show at Club Didi on Friday, June 24th at 8 pm.

Nutz About History: Never one to shy away from change, but rather embrace it with the “Yes Let’s” desire of improvisers, by the end of 2013 change was in the air yet again. Drama Nutz was faced with two choices: remain and operate the NAAG Studio on their own, or find a new home. With a desire to grow and partner with the ever changing and evolving theatre community, they chose the latter. So with great vigor and the enthusiasm that comes with opening the door to a new home, Drama Nutz began to move to a space known as The Bo****lo. Operated by Theatre Outré, The Bo****lo – later renamed Club Didi- started as a simple rental arrangement to cut down on costs for both companies and eventually grew to what it is today.

When the lights first came up on the Drama Nutz at Club Didi, it started simply enough with a continuation of the Wednesday Night Nutz series that had launched at the NAAG the season before. Everything continued in the same vein, Wednesdays saw unique offerings presented at the space, and each month saw an improv show and a murder mystery. A few short months later, it was time for change once more.

Heading into the 2014/2015 Season, Drama Nutz and Theatre Outre began to collaborate on shows. Not only did the improv shows- newly branded as “Nutz Unshelled”- switch to a Friday night performance, but a brand new collaborative show was in the works: “Gomorrah”. What launched as a simple long form show, has in the time since become a sell-out success of long form improv, using performers from Drama Nutz, Theatre Outre and the community at large to bring to life Lethbridge’s only improvised soap opera. The format was one that Drama Nutz had toyed with in the past, but by working with Theatre Outre both companies now had the resources to hone in on the show and bring the dream to life.

From rehearsals to performances and even the odd jam session, Club Didi was truly a place to call home, where anyone can be accepted for who they are, and an example of just how much can be achieved by working together.

Come and see for yourself, as Club Didi hosts them one last time in Drama Nutz: The Farewell Show, Friday, June 24th at 8 pm

Countdown to Nutz: With only two sleeps until the big show, we are in the final countdown. So who better than to kick this off, than Emily Schoen. She loves improv so much she is doing shows all this week, appearing in Linked Improv at the Improv Series at Ignite! Festival up in Calgary today and tomorrow – which you should totally check out, or at the very least given suggestions for the shows- and then blitzing down for Lethbridge for one last hurrah with the troup that she had been a huge part of for the last two years. From bringing her energy and innocence to improv scenes, to gracing the stage at the Edmonton Fringe, Emily always brings the positivity of an anthropomorphic Disney creature to the stage!

So whether she’s throwing down in a Beastie Boyz or calling in her awesome characters in a Telephone Scene, Emily takes the skills she learns from improv to her daily life. As she puts it so succinctly “planning is hard”. Despite this she is very excited to see where the life of improv will take her, and plans to take Linked Improv to as many festivals as she can in the coming months. If that’s not enough, Emily is also planning to create a brand new show this fall! So be sure to watch out for Emily on the improv scene for years to come.

Come and see Emily in action with the Drama Nutz one last time at Drama Nutz: The Farewell Show at Club Didi on Friday, June 24th at 8 pm!

Countdown to Nutz: Double dose time; our next performer we have the pleasure of introducing to you, Erinn Watson, has worked with more improv companies that we know what to do with! From the 404’s to Synaptic Chaos Theatre, from running TUTS (The Unscripted Theatre Society) at the University of Lethbridge to working with Drama Nutz off and on throughout the years, her resume is lengthy and impressive. Currently pursuing the high life of a Calgary socialite, Erinn is never far from her roots and with her voice and passion can be seen taking a role in the spotlight everywhere she goes. Over the last two years in particular, Erinn has brought her unique talents at crafting games to the troupe, seeing the strengths of those she is working with and using it to create visceral stories and scenes. Perhaps that’s just the director and her coming out.

Ever the intellect, Erinn can often be seen using world play in her scenes- even if that means that she is going to be the nagging mother character, both on and off the stage. With her energy and conviction, Erinn will likely be a part of improv for years to come. She is excited to come back for the show, especially to play one last game of Telephone Scene.

Come on out to Drama Nutz: The Farewell Show at Club Didi, Friday, June 24th at 8 pm.
