TheatreXtra TheatreXtra is a student-run theatre company at the University of Lethbridge.

TheatreXtra is a student-centric theatre production program, with a mandate to encourage innovative processes for development and/or rehearsal of a theatre production, provide opportunities for students to extend the skills acquired through Drama courses and previous experience, and help prepare students for participation in projects like fringe festivals, emerging arts festivals, and independent

productions. The current TheatreXtra team is as follows:

Meet part one of our design team: Reese and Eli! Jealous of those already on board? Sign up for auditions or email us about a board op position!

Reese is a current student at The University of Lethbridge studying Dramatic Arts - Technical Theatre, while minoring in Women & Gender Studies. He is an aspiring costume designer and makeup artist but stepped out of his comfort zone to set design for Strange Country. In doing this he hopes to gain more experience and skills in set design/dressing and to better understand the storytelling power of set design. Theatre based credits include A Shackled Heart (Experience Theatre) as set designer and painter, Pants (Theatre Xtra, Experience Theatre) as costume designer, Jesus Christ Superstar (University of Lethbridge) as wardrobe crew member and SFX makeup artist, Midsummer Night’s Dream (University of Lethbridge) as Head of Wardrobe, and most recently, Millennium (New West Theatre) as Co-Head of Wardrobe. Reese is extremely excited to be working with the Strange Country team to bring this unusual and beautiful story to life!

Hi, my name is Elizabeth Mawii, though you can also call me Eli! I am a busy bee who typically does a lot of stage managing–Orlando and Winnie-the-Pooh being my most recent shows–and will be doing so again for Animal Farm. YAY! Many of you may also know me as the president of The Dave Smith Fan Club; however, I’m no longer allowed to distribute merchandise.
I’m so excited to be this year’s costume designer, and I can’t wait for everyone to see the awesome show!
Random fun fact: I don’t own ANY yellow in my closet. (I’m an awful bee, I know).

Team announcement alert! Get excited to get back to school with the team behind TheatreXtra’s fall show, Strange Country. And keep an eye on your email for audition information!

Steele Prefontaine is a pan-prairie playwright and designer hailing from Swift Current, SK. He currently resides in Lethbridge, AB, where he is pursuing a degree in Drama (Tech/Design). As a playwright, Steele is concerned with how environment shapes us, life on the margins, and the ghosts that haunt us every day. Past productions of his work include Homebodies (2025, Lyric Theatre). Prefontaine received first prize in the 2026 University of Lethbridge Play Right Prize for his one act Homebodies.
Steele would like to thank the creative team for all their excellent work over the summer, the readers who gave feedback during revisions and TheatreXtra for their continued support of student playwrights.

Morgan Hill is a 4th year student at the U of L, currently pursuing a BFA in Drama Performance! Strange Country is Morgan’s first time dipping her toes into the waters of directing, and she is incredibly grateful for the opportunity.
Born and raised in Lethbridge, she’s always been fascinated by the rolling coulees, vast grasslands, and all things prairie. In Strange Country, she, and the audience, get to develop their own sense of how these things inherently affect the lives who reside near them, including the lives of all of us at the University of Lethbridge. You may recognize Morgan from her performances in The U of L’s productions of Orlando, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, or Yisstiyii, or with TheatreXtra in Ketchup or North Star, Adrianne.

Oki! My name is Theo Thatcher-Silveira and I am a Drama Education student at the University of Lethbridge. I am very excited to be stage-managing Strange Country for the fall term’s TheatreXtra show!
Outside of TheatreXtra and stage management, I have participated in most areas of technical theatre. Ask me, I will probably have a story for you! Although most of what I do now is backstage, I have acted throughout my childhood, and it’s what I come back to the most. Show runs October 7-10, I hope to see everyone in the audience!

Our Winter 2027 Production is Bluebirds by Vern Thiessen, directed by Cidelle Crawford!

“Bluebirds, by Governor General’s Award-winning Alberta playwright Vern Thiessen, tells the true story of three Canadian Army Medical Corps Nursing Sisters: Katherine Maud Macdonald, Margaret Lowe, and Gladys Mary Wake.
Christy, Maggie, and Bab gave everything and were largely forgotten. Their lives, in the author’s words, cross time and space, and the theatrical setting of this story lives in the minds, memories, and hearts of these three women.
In this production, the Nursing Sisters are supported first by each other, but also by the spirits of the men they healed, ancestors, and angels from the other side - as I believe we all are buttressed through the crucibles of our own lives”

Now announcing the Fall 2026 show: Strange Country, written by Steele Prefontaine and directed by Morgan Hill!

“Buried deep in the golden, rolling hills of South Saskatchewan lives the Leduc family. Isolated from the wider world and each other, Emile, Aimee-Belle and their daughter, Odette have been forever changed by the quick death of the Leduc’s oldest daughter, Clementine. Eleven years after her passing, Clementine has returned home–unchanged from the day she was last seen, wanting to be accepted back into her family. Over the course of the night, the Leduc’s must decide where to go from here. This prairie gothic drama explores grief and a family at odds when confronted with the unnatural and unexpected. You are now entering Strange Country.”
