I would like everyone to play what if with me. I think we are in a good position to use our empathy to better understand the situation here in so-called Canada.

Imagine the war in Palestine stops today and Palestinians are allowed to move freely if they choose or stay on the land reserved for them. They are promised hospitals will be built and they will be taken care of. 100 years down the road things look somewhat normal from the outside but many areas have only recently gotten electricity and the Palestinians have often had to organize that themselves, the hospitals have not been built - they have to travel many hours to get medical care with no public transportation, and some sections where Palestinians live still have no clean drinking water, not even to clean wounds.

Now imagine going to an event and an Israeli (who doesn't remember the history clearly and considers themselves an ally) begins to "play Indian" and get the audience to try on Palestinian practices and take deep breaths and feel rather good about themselves for being so forward thinking at a time that is meant to be a land acknowledgement. That is meant to be unsettling and remind everyone of the systemic oppression, of the specific atrocities on that land, of the continued genocide in the form of stolen sisters and the choice from the state not to take adequate action. That is meant to dare people to do something.

So now we are all pretending to be like the Palestinians instead of skillfully asking the organizers of the event or the state to put their money where their mouth is; or looking deeply inside ourselves to see what our skills and position could do to benefit our neighbors who were so violently mistreated (by our own grandparents in many cases). Now we are feeding our collective ignorance.

May these words find their way to those who need them and bring about a stronger understanding of allyship: a commitment to being a true accomplice in the fight for reparations and land protection.

Hey hey, beautiful people. Our collective, Mossy Society, is starting a project in which we provide smart phones with decent cameras to un/derhoused artists with 80gig phone plans so they can send us footage of their lives and art (and communicate more easily with friends and family). We will post videos with our non profit $10k/month Google add campaign to begin selling their art internationally to support their projects and end the cycles of poverty our governmental systems have created.

** if you have AN OLD PHONE laying around unused please send it my way.

Much love!

Land back in the Kootenays, who's making it happen? Just learned from my hitchhike host (who was coming back from a Sinixt language class at Selkirk) that the Sinixt people were declared extinct in the 1950's as part of a land grab. They had to flee to the US and the reserve that was supposed to be given to them was sold to the Doukhobors.

My hitchhike host for the earlier leg of the journey, before the junction, was a lovely Doukhobor musician. We talked about mountain music and all the folks telling stories through song in these parts.

Our grandparents didn't know what was happening. They were told the Sinixt people just up and left, that they didn't want to be here anymore.

Now we know... The responsibility has fallen on us to do something about it.

So, what land is being given to the Sinixt in the sacred Slocan valley? What taxes are being paid to them for the land being used here now?

They are a sovereign nation and we have to ask ourselves: When did we give up our sovereignty and how do we get it back? How do we form a nation that has the power to return the land to the rightful caretakers?

If not now, when?
