Sometimes you get a message that reminds you why you make art. 💛

This week, a friend sent me this photo and shared a story I won’t soon forget.

She was spending the day with an 80-year-old woman who has been struggling with memory loss and deeply missing her beloved dog, “Messy Jesse.”

While visiting the gift shop at The Keratin Art Gallery in Abbotsford, they came across one of my little dog prints.

Her face lit up.

“Messy Jesse!”

She was convinced she’d found her dog.

They bought the print, found a frame, and now this colourful little pup has a place of honour on the fireplace where she can see him from her chair.

Her friend told me how much her spirits lifted after finding it.

As an artist, you send your work out into the world and you never really know where it will end up—or what it might mean to someone.

This one meant a little more than I ever could have imagined. 💛

This is why I create.

quiet encounter at Aldergrove Park.

Not long ago, we spotted an owl tucked among the branches, sitting so still that it would have been easy to walk right past without noticing it.

Moments like that stay with me.

This small painting was inspired by that encounter and became a chance to explore colour, pattern, and presence in a way that feels true to how I experience wildlife.

Sometimes the animals that leave the biggest impression aren’t the ones making the most noise.

In case you’re new here, I’m Sheryl — the artist behind Wild Hues Studio.

I paint BC wildlife in bold, expressive colour because I want people to stop for a moment, notice the animal in front of them, and feel that connection to the wild places around us.

Lately I’ve been working on smaller pieces and submissions, but the heart of it is still the same:

colour, wildlife, and that moment of presence.

Thanks for being here. 💛
