Calliope Collective

Calliope Collective We are dedicated to Creative Placemaking, Fostering Development and Cultivating a sense of wonderment

Calliope Collective is an arts collective made of a few core members, and a project based revolving cast of characters, who reside on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe and Haudnosaunee in Kingston/Katarokwi. Calliope aims to explore and expose spectacle, wonderment, and the ways art and performance can transport and transform perception by combining and remixing elements from a broad

spectrum of arts practices. We desire to work collaboratively with artists, performers, individuals, and organizations, and to foster those collaborations through a curatorial and creative lens that will open dialogues in the Kingston arts community. Members of Calliope came together from a variety of artistic and creative backgrounds, due to mutual attraction to inter-disciplinary arts. We have experience in festivals (both planning and performance), theatre, dance, costume making, stilt-walking & circus arts, live music performance, and curatorial.

Many blessings to you on this Fall Equinox!
Mabon is a time of balance, the second harvest…
Feeling the Persephone energy today and embracing both the light and the dark.
What are you sitting with / in? Where will you focus on sharing your energy? What will you pull into deep integration in the coming months?

THAW

One of many works that spoke to the climate crisis, and specifically water. Created by Joshua Thomson with an original score by Alaskan composer Matthew Burtner, THAW was an eight-hour performance with 3 performers alternating throughout the day to take their position on the ice suspended above the square—each brought their own interpretation to the battle for climate justice.

So enamoured with this artist, taking inspiration from ceramic tiles in her home in Iran she has created a holographic display of enchantment… Sky Within, and pictures do not do this justice. Now let’s figure out how to put it outside on water ;)

Yyesterday we spent contemplating how to move forward in truth and reconciliation, on a path to right relations. We we have tried to honour protocols and learn how to be better stewards of the land when producing our gatherings in parks and on the water — moving forward we hope to enhance those practices of collaboration and stewardship. And to hold them close in our hearts and mind as we move through our lives each and every day. Reading through the status of many of the 94 calls to action has been a shocking eye-opener to how little has been done since the truth and reconciliation report came out. If you were wondering yesterday, what you could do, please visit the link and become dedicated to at least one of the calls. Just one. If we all do this, perhaps the government will move forward on more than the 13 that have been answered this far.

From Tricia: I am part of a community advisory group established for the City of Kingston Arts Fund review to ensure it reflects the diverse needs of our local arts sector. CKAF/KAC funding was instrumental in Calliope’s early development and recently in helping bring HYDRA: The Spirit of Water to close to 1500 people last summer... but honestly, we needed a grant for the creation year in addition to the one we got for producing the show. This is one of the changes I’d personally love to see.

🎪 🎭 📽 I want to know what you think. 🎶 👯‍♀️ ✒

We’ll be hosting various pop-up engagements within the community to collect ideas, suggestions, and feedback that can inform the future of municipal arts funding. Due to the busyness of summer and conflicting priorities, I’d love to engage folks in this conversation online, in addition to the pop-ups happening over the next month, starting with the question:

Do you face challenges with existing arts funding opportunities in Kingston, or do you have barriers or challenges you experience when applying to funding?

Do you have any ideas on how to improve funding for arts and culture in Kingston?

If you’d like to jump ahead and give additional feedback there is also a survey from the city here: https://lnkd.in/gPhBqi92.
