A quilt for presence. Lately I’ve felt the need for less information and more presence. Less analysis, less productivity, less trying to learn something from every moment. Just simple being.

I was drawn to the Candy Coated pattern I found in the Sunday Morning Quilts book. Not because it was spectacular or challenging or meaningful, but because it looked warm, comforting, and inviting. The kind of quilt that made me want to hug it.

Beauty doesn’t need a purpose beyond being enjoyed. This quilt is my reminder that existence is enough.

From scraps to something whole.

This Candy Coated quilt began with a practical goal: reducing my scrap piles.
I love fabric, but too many leftovers eventually start to feel like noise. Clearing physical clutter helps me clear mental clutter too.

This quilt used a surprising number of scraps and turned them into something useful, warm, and beautiful. Tiny pieces that seemed insignificant on their own—even some fabrics that I considered “ugly”—became part of something larger.

Hmmm... all sorts of life lessons there.

I wonder where this Martha quilt will eventually live. Over the back of a couch? Folded at the foot of a bed? Wrapped around someone during a difficult season?

Slow stitching days.

The longarm hummed away all afternoon while the wind blew through the trees outside. Pentecost was just a week ago, and I was thinking about the ways the Holy Spirit breathes life and joy into the world.

Dense quilting days.

This Flourishing Hearts pantograph is slowly stitching its way across the Martha quilt variant. Intricate designs like this take a long time to finish - 45 minutes for a single pass and this quilt needs seven passes - so I bring my laptop into the longarm room and work on social media posts while keeping one eye on the machine.

People sometimes assume dense quilting will always make a quilt stiff, but I haven’t found that to be true when I use a lighter woven backing fabric. The quilt still keeps its softness and drape — just with all that delicious texture added in.

The back of this quilt top is not especially tidy! Threads, knots, and a lot of seams meeting in one place. But on the front, something entirely different is taking shape. It makes me think about how much of my life looks like the back—unfinished, tangled, hard to follow—while trusting that God is ultimately forming something good.
