Back to my roots with a creative portrait.

All the time I feel I am discovering what makes my art unique and this piece feels like a testament to that. Stepping away from the need for complete realism, I am enjoying the process of exaggerating features and playing with concepts to develop mood within my art.

Coming back from my year long drawing hiatus with something new. I’ve found it difficult to dedicate time to art while in school, especially when my drawings tend to take a significant amount of time and concentration. In an effort to incorporate more creativity in my life, I’ve begun experimenting with some new styles that I’ve really enjoyed. I drew this girl while in class today.

My Interpretation of Henry Fuseli’s “The Nightmare” (1781)

Recent creative piece drawn for my university World Literature History of Horror class. “The Nightmare” has influenced countless parodies and references in pop culture, including the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Interestingly, a modern viewer’s interpretation of this piece likely differs greatly from how an original spectator in 1781 would have understood it. The Nightmare was painted during the Enlightenment, a period in which society began to reject blind faith and instead accept a more scientific understanding of the natural world. Still, many people were hesitant of science and turned to superstition to explain natural phenomenon. Hence, when ‘The Nightmare’ was painted, the definition of a “nightmare” referred to a literal “night - mare” ; a demonic being (mare) who torments a sleeper at night. This phenomenon is now recognized as sleep paralysis.
