Praised for her “gorgeous, rich tone” and fresh, insightful interpretations, Canadian violinist Gabrielle Després has emerged as a compelling young artist, enjoying a diverse career as a soloist and chamber musician. As a recent finalist of the 2025 Sibelius International Violin Competition, she was also first-prize winner of the Irving M. Klein International String Competition and the Juilliard Concerto Competition, and a top prize recipient at the Michael Hill, Elmar Oliveira, and Washington International Violin Competitions. She has garnered major honors including the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award, Verbier Academy’s Prix Reyl, and Juilliard’s distinguished William Schuman Prize. In 2020, CBC recognized her artistry by naming her to its list of 30 Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30.

Chamber of Music Kelowna Is thrilled to present four extraordinary young artists in a special June concert, featuring an exciting program of duos, trios, and quartets on June 24 at the Rotary Centre for the Arts:

Violinist Gabrielle Després, an Edmonton native and Juilliard graduate, is a rising International star and recent finalist at the Sibelius International Violin Competition in Helsinki.

Joining her is Angela Chan, winner of Germany's Joseph Joachim Violin Competition and a graduate of the renowned Curtis Institute.

Violist Samuel Rosenthal, winner of the 2025 Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and Juilliard graduate has already earned International recognition for his chamber music artistry.

And returning to Kelowna is acclaimed Ottawa-born cellist Bryan Cheng - prize winner in both the Queen Elizabeth and Geneva cello competitions, and who now performs on stages around the world.

Internationally acclaimed for his generous musical spirit, violist Samuel Rosenthal delights in sharing music with audiences of all ages and collaborating with some of today’s preeminent artists. His performances are recognized for their “intimate, personal approach” (Journal of the American Viola Society) and communicative style “clearly conveying the range of human emotions” (ClevelandClassical.com).

First Prize winner at the 2025 Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, Sam was also recipient of the silver medal at the 2021 Primrose International Viola Competition. Other awards and recognitions include major prizes at the Johansen International Competition and, as a member of the Razumovsky String Quartet, at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.

Sam began his musical studies in Cleveland, and continued his viola studies with Jeffrey Irvine as a member of the Young Artist Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music. His passion for chamber music was ignited by formative work with the Cavani String Quartet and Cleveland Quartet violinist Peter Salaff. Since 2016, he has been a member of the Perlman Music Program community as a student at both the Summer Music School and the Chamber Music Workshop. His time at PMP involved transformative travel residencies to Sarasota, Palm Beach, and Tel Aviv, Israel.

Chamber music plays a central part in Sam’s musical life. Since 2023, he has attended the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, where he had the opportunity to perform and collaborate with its legendary roster of extraordinary artists. Sam has been invited to perform at a variety of celebrated chamber music festivals across the United States and abroad including Chamberfest Cleveland, Musique de Chambre en Normandie, Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival, Music from Angel Fire, and Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute. In March 2024, he performed at the Schiermonnikoog Festival in the Netherlands, where he received the Audience Prize. He is grateful to have performed with some of the preeminent artists of our time including Itzhak Perlman, Miriam Fried, Joseph Lin, and Anthony McGill.

Sam is a graduate of the Juilliard School where he had the honor of studying with Heidi Castleman, Misha Amory, and Hsin-Yun Huang and was a proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship. He is currently studying at the Kronberg Academy under the tutelage of Nobuko Imai. These studies are funded by the Annika and Wolfgang Fink Patronage. His studies of viola and chamber music have also included work with esteemed artists such as Tabea Zimmermann, Kim Kashkashian, Donald Weilerstein, Roger Tapping, Yura Lee, Merry Peckham, and Joel Krosnick.

Angela Chan is a Hong Kong-born violinist whose playing has been described by The Violin Channel as a “marvel of effortless beauty,” and who “glides seamlessly through every phrase with enthralling perfection.” A distinguished soloist and chamber musician, she is acclaimed for her refined tone, expressive depth, and stylistic versatility.

She is the winner of the prestigious 2024 Hannover Joseph Joachim Violin Competition and recipient of the prize for the best interpretation of commissioned work, first prize and winner of the best interpretation of concerto prize in the 2017 Louis Spohr Violin Competition, and laureate of the Singapore International Violin Competition and Shanghai Isaac SternInternational Competition. Founder and violinist of the AYA piano trio, the trio has won first prize of the WDAV Chamber Music Competition and Yellow Spring Chamber Competition. Ms. Chan is fast emerging as one of the most unique and polished violinists of her generation.

As a soloist, Angela has appeared with numerous orchestras including NDR Radiophilharmonie, The Staatskapelle Weimar Orchestra of Germany, Brussels Philharmonic, Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, and Hong Kong Philharmonic. In 2016, Ms. Chan was selected as a soloist to a tour around the states with The Curtis Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Chan has held many recitals in various cities such as Boston, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Rhode Island, Hong Kong, Beijing, Xiamen, and Guizhou.

As an active chamber musician, Ms. Chan has collaborated with world famous artists such as Nobuko Imai, Phillip Setzer, Hsinyun Huang, Peter Wiley, Gary Hoffman, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Marcy Rosen etc.

Angela’s festival appearances as a soloist and chamber musician include Heifetz Institute of Music as Artist-in-Residence, Verbier Festival Academy, Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, and Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. Ms. Chan recently attended the renowned Marlboro Chamber Music Festival.

Born in Hong Kong, Angela started playing the violin at the age of 3 under her mother. She continued her violin studies with Michael James Ma, Vera WeiLing Tsu in Beijing, China, and Shmuel Ashkenasi, Pamela Frank, and Aaron Rosand at the Curtis Institute of Music. With full scholarship granted, she received her master’s degree with Donald Weilerstein at the New England Conservatory of Music. She is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the Queen Elizabeth Music Chapel in Belgium.

Ms. Chan is the first awardee of the Music and Dance Distinguished Performance Commendation Scheme of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and the scholarship recipient of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance fund and the Lin Yao Ji Foundation.

Canadian-born, Berlin-based cellist Bryan Cheng is one of the most exciting classical musicians of his generation, acclaimed for his intensity, artistry, and imaginative programming. The only musician in 40 years to win prizes at both the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition and Geneva International Music Competition, he has earned praise from audiences, critics, and leading orchestras around the world.

In the 2025/26 season, Cheng makes major debuts with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and Orchestre symphonique de Québec, while returning to renowned ensembles across Europe, Africa, and North America.

An accomplished chamber musician, Cheng regularly collaborates with internationally celebrated artists and performs at major festivals and concert halls worldwide. He was the first cellist to receive the Verbier Festival Academy’s Prix Yves Paternot and won the 2023 Virginia Parker Prize, Canada’s highest honour for emerging classical musicians.

His recordings have earned widespread critical acclaim, including his 2023 album *Portrait*, which was nominated for two JUNO Awards. A graduate of Berlin’s Universität der Künste and the Kronberg Academy, Cheng performs on the 1696 Bonjour Stradivari cello, generously loaned by the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank.

The Balourdet Quartet is acclaimed for their vibrant energy and masterful blend of technical precision and emotional depth that brings a fresh perspective to both beloved classics and modern compositions. Its unique closeness and willingness to take creative risks earned it the 2024 Avery Fisher Career Grant, as well as Chamber Music America’s 2024 Cleveland Quartet Award. With more than 70 concerts per season, recent highlights include the Balourdet’s debuts at Carnegie and Wigmore Halls, and new string quartets by composers Karim Al-Zand, Paul Novak, and Nicky Sohn through grants from Chamber Music America (2021) and the Barlow Foundation (2023). They have recently been named the first ever Quartet-in-Residence at the Seattle Chamber Music Society and have recently completed residencies at Indiana University and the New England Conservatory’s Professional String Quartet Program.

Highlights of the 2025-26 season include performances at Carnegie Hall, the Freer Gallery at the Smithsonian, Boston’s Celebrity Series in Jordan Hall, and Chamber Music Houston. Recently, they have performed at the Kennedy Center, Buffalo Chamber Music, the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, and La Jolla Music Society and Rockport Music. Collaborations include violinist James Ehnes, pianists Marc-André Hamelin and Simone Dinnerstein, cellists Zuill Bailey and Astrid Schween, violist Jordan Bak, and the Dover, Pacifica, and Ying Quartets. They continue their position as String Quartet in Residence with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle in North Carolina where they curate the Up Close Chamber Music Series, serve as principals in the orchestra, and engage with the larger community of the Triangle region. Most recently, the Balourdet received the Chamber Music Award from the National Federation of Music Clubs for the 25-26 season and are winners of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music’s 2025 Innovation Competition for their educational initiative Expedition Strings.

Committed to sharing their musical values with the next generation, the quartet has served regularly as faculty at the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, JDR Summer Music Academy, Berkshire Summer Music, and Opus Chamber Music. They have also given masterclasses and coachings at Northwestern University, University of Michigan, Rice University, Emory University, New England Conservatory Preparatory Department, Fischoff Chamber Music Academy, Upper Valley Chamber Music, and Wright State University.
