A River of Yarn

A River of Yarn Turn your latest fashion inspiration into reality with our select yarns and tools. Visit us on the Trent Severn Waterway. We hope to see you soon and safely!

Both luxurious, yet affordable, our variety of yarns, accessories, tools, and kits are guaranteed to spark your creativity. Beyond our wide variety of yarns, tools, and accessories, we also specialize in teaching knitting and crochet to the community. Our classes are offered to beginners, advanced, and all in between. Classes are led by owner and fibre arts professional, Tracy Minnema. Tracy first

learned how to knit and crochet at five years old. After obtaining a Fashion Merchandising Diploma, Tracy worked in the fashion industry in Toronto. Following this, Tracy graduated from Queen’s University Faculty of Education with an Education Certification in Technological Studies - Clothing and Fashion Specialization. Tracy has recently retired from teaching Clothing & Fashion courses at the secondary level in Family Studies for the past 30 years. Her experience with fibre arts and passion for teaching allow Tracy to deliver one-of-a-kind learning experiences to the community. As we are located along the Trent Severn Waterway, we are accessible by both land and water. By land, we are a 15-minute drive south of Peterborough. By water, we are a 5-minute boat ride on the Otonabee River, north of Rice Lake. We are now reopened with all necessary public health restrictions.

I am so excited to have some of the best fibre artists and female business owners in this industry as instructors for the Riversong Fibre Retreat coming up in November.

Introducing Catherine Cole - Needle Felting Instructor

Cathy is the fibre artist behind Lolli & Boo, a small business rooted in a love of natural materials and slow, intentional making. Working primarily with wool, she creates nature-inspired pieces that are both beautiful and functional, including felted vessels, landscapes, and small sculptural forms. Drawing on both needle and wet felting techniques, Cathy’s work reflects an organic, earthy aesthetic inspired by the quiet textures of the natural world.

Her teaching style is relaxed, supportive, and beginner-friendly, with a focus on helping students build confidence while exploring their own creativity. Cathy believes in the value of working with your hands, embracing imperfection, and creating meaningful pieces that connect us to nature and to the process of making.

Catherine is offering three needle felting workshops during the retreat weekend. They include:

Landscape with Sheep
Organic Felted Vessels: Sculpting with Wool
Tiny Woodland Mice: Needle Felting with Simple Armatures

Did you happen to see this on the weekend of June 13th? It was an Examiner page spread celebrating 25 years of the Dragon Boat Festival and Women in Business in Peterborough, ON. In past years I have participated in this event as a paddler and was proud to support once again as an business advertiser. If you happen to have a paper copy of this, I would love to get a copy. I was at KYAFF as a vendor that weekend and was not able to get one.

Some sad news to share. This is my Auntie Jacq, the woman who taught me how to knit one summer at her cottage on Round Lake when I was 9 years old. I told her when she visited here a couple years ago that it is all her fault that I now have a yarn business 😁 This picture was from our visit last fall. She passed away this past weekend at the age of 95. Thank you Auntie Jacq for giving me this life long skill. Rest in peace & say hi to mom & dad🥰 ❤️
