We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Cris Derksen.

Cris was set to join the KSO this September to open our 50th Anniversary season, and we had been looking forward to welcoming her extraordinary artistry, voice, and generous spirit to Kamloops.

Cris Derksen, a Juno-nominated Indigenous cellist and composer, was internationally recognized for genre-defying work that bridges traditional and contemporary music. Hailing from Treaty 8 territory in Northern Alberta, she came from a lineage of chiefs from the NorthTall Cree Reserve on her father’s side and strong Mennonite homesteaders on her mother’s. Her work intricately wove together classical training, Indigenous heritage, and contemporary electronic elements into music that expanded what audiences could expect from the stage.

Her impact was not only artistic, but structural. She helped broaden the possibilities of what orchestral and chamber music can hold, and whose stories can be centered within it. For many, her music did not just innovate, it shifted perspectives.

Her loss is felt deeply across Canada’s music community, and among the many artists, ensembles, and audiences who were challenged, moved, and changed by her work.

At this moment, our thoughts are with her family, friends, collaborators, and the many communities who were shaped by her music and leadership.

What a night at Sagebrush Theatre!

Saturday's A Walk to Beethoven brought together everything we love about live music: a packed house, a fearless program, and artists who gave everything. To have internationally renowned pianist David Fung perform both the world premiere of T Patrick Carrabre's A Guest on These Lands, followed by Beethoven's Choral Fantasy... To have local, regional, national, and international artists all sharing the stage at once, with nearly all of our vocal soloists making their orchestral debuts... It was the kind of moment that reminds you why live music matters.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to conductor Jennifer Tung, pianist David Fung, composer Patrick Carrabré, chorusmaster Tomáš Bijok, our six soloists, the full KSO Chorus, and of course the musicians of your Kamloops Symphony Orchestra for an unforgettable evening!

And to Fairfield by Marriott Kamloops: Thank you for your continued support!

More great music ahead! Stay tuned.

April didn’t hold back! One minute it’s thunder and storytelling in Rip, Roar & Rain with several Canadian premieres. Next it’s a full burst of Sound & Colour for dozens of young families and hundreds of students. Then took the stage with an astounding Dutilleux and Brahms. And somehow we ended up inside the wild, intricate world of Infinite Bach with , and KSO principal winds Olivia Martin and Marea Chernoff.

A lot happened. And caught it all on camera.

Photo dump time. Dive in, relive it all, and tell us what moment you’re still thinking about!
