We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Cris Derksen.
Cris was set to join the KSO this September to open our 50th Anniversary season, and we had been looking forward to welcoming her extraordinary artistry, voice, and generous spirit to Kamloops.
Cris Derksen, a Juno-nominated Indigenous cellist and composer, was internationally recognized for genre-defying work that bridges traditional and contemporary music. Hailing from Treaty 8 territory in Northern Alberta, she came from a lineage of chiefs from the NorthTall Cree Reserve on her father’s side and strong Mennonite homesteaders on her mother’s. Her work intricately wove together classical training, Indigenous heritage, and contemporary electronic elements into music that expanded what audiences could expect from the stage.
Her impact was not only artistic, but structural. She helped broaden the possibilities of what orchestral and chamber music can hold, and whose stories can be centered within it. For many, her music did not just innovate, it shifted perspectives.
Her loss is felt deeply across Canada’s music community, and among the many artists, ensembles, and audiences who were challenged, moved, and changed by her work.
At this moment, our thoughts are with her family, friends, collaborators, and the many communities who were shaped by her music and leadership.
