Renowned Indigenous cellist and composer Cris Derksen has passed away following a vehicle collision in Alberta on Saturday.

Originally from Treaty 8 territory in northern Alberta, Cris Derksen (Cree) was widely recognized for genre-defying work that bridged classical music, Indigenous musical traditions, and contemporary electronic sound.

A Juno-nominated artist, Derksen helped expand what Indigenous music could look and feel like across orchestral halls, festivals, film, theatre, dance, and contemporary performance spaces throughout Turtle Island and beyond.

Derksen also composed music for the Pulitzer Prize-winning podcast Stolen: Surviving St. Michael’s, founded the Indigenous Classical Gathering at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2024 with Orchestre Métropolitain and conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

Their 2015 project Orchestral Powwow became one of the defining works of contemporary Indigenous classical fusion.

Early reports also indicate Cris’ wife was seriously injured in the accident. We are holding their loved ones in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.

//Just the other night my son and I went to a Metis Kitchen Party hosted in the First People's House at UVic.
There was fiddler play for us while we were taught dance steps.
This was such a fun event to see. Even though I'm not a jigger, I've heard and witnessed the songs and dances throughout my life, and hearing classics like The Red River Jig brought back memories growing up around the NWT

Both my grandparents on my mom's side were registered as Metis, although they should have always been considered status. But you know, government 🙃

Wesley is a distant relative and I'm glad I got the opportunity to connect with him and show him The Metis Heritage book. If anyone knows where to get a copy of the book, please let me know. there is such a wealth of knowledge within those pages and I'd love to pass out some copies to other people

It was also great to see many Inuit come out and support the music, and thank you to Rebecca (only got her first name) for inviting me and my son to the next Inuit community gathering here in Victoria next month.

//What a treat it was to see the perform and share their culture earlier this month. It was exciting to see my professors in a different setting. You could see the passion in her eyes and hear it in her voice as spoke about the stories surrounding these dances and how she praised everyone who helped make this event come to life from the little ones who are learning these teaching to the older generations who are passing it down.

For me, drumming music is such powerful medicine and witnessing this was wonderful
