✨ A little about myself ✨

My name is Jayda Kogiak, originally a Sittichinli. I am Gwich’in/Inuvialuit and was born and raised in Inuvik. I am happily married to my husband, Edward Kogiak, and together we are raising our two handsome boys. Family has always been one of the most important parts of my life and continues to inspire everything I do.

Growing up, I developed a strong passion for sewing because of my late grandmother, Ruby McLeod. As a young girl, I would sit and watch her sew all kinds of beautiful creations. I was always amazed by the talent, patience, and artistry she carried in her hands. Watching her work inspired me deeply and planted the seed for my own love of sewing.

My sewing journey truly began after I met my husband in 2011. While I was pregnant, my mother-in-law taught me how to embroider high-top slippers and helped me put them together. From that moment on, my passion for sewing continued to grow stronger. What started as learning a new skill soon became something I truly loved and dedicated myself to.

Today, I create many different handmade items including beaded vests, slippers, earrings, covers, parkas, and more. Every piece I make carries creativity, culture, and a part of my story. Sewing and beadwork have become more than just hobbies to me — they are ways to express myself, honour my culture, and continue traditions passed down through generations.

Throughout my sewing journey, my biggest supporters and mentors have been Mildred and Nungki. They have taught me so much of what I know today, and I am truly grateful for their guidance and encouragement. They have always supported me, lifted me up, and motivated me to keep improving my work and believing in myself.

Even today, I continue to attend sewing classes because I believe you can never stop learning. There is always something new to discover, and every experience helps me grow both as an artist and as a person. One thing I have learned along the way is that patience is key. With time, dedication, and practice, you will eventually reach your goals.

You can find and follow my beadwork and creations on my page, “Jayda Lynn’s Gems.”
