Meet Barney Cashman: The Would-Be Casanova at the Heart of Last of the Red Hot Lovers
Playing from August 19-30 at Hudson Village Theatre, Neil Simon’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers is a story centered around Barney Cashman, a respectable seafood restaurant owner and a somewhat happily married man who is having what can only be described as an incredibly awkward midlife crisis. Believing that life is passing him by and determined to experience one great romantic adventure, he borrows his mother’s empty apartment and arranges three adulterous afternoon trysts with three very different women. Of course, Barney soon discovers that being a “red-hot lover” is far more complicated than he thought and that he is hopelessly and ridiculously unprepared for adultery!
Beneath all the fumbling attempts at seduction, Neil Simon shows us a simple and recognizable man confronting age, marriage, desire and the fear that he may have missed something. Barney’s search for excitement ultimately becomes a funny and surprisingly tender journey toward discovering what he truly wants.
The result is comedy that is witty, fast-moving and wonderfully uncomfortable—yet always grounded in warmth, vulnerability and characters audiences can recognize!
