So I get a call, Thursday evening (I'm already in bed) and cuzzin Mike calls in a panic. He wants art done on Hazel's casket. We discuss designs and I prepare. Her wake is Friday, funeral Sunday. I show up middle of the night, casket is already varnished. To those who know, you cannot burn on varnish without causing carcinogens to billow into the air. Too risky. So I call, he says he has a piece of wood we can put into the casket. Okay. Now the piece is smaller than what I prep for. New design. For Trevor, I was willing to make the change cause its for his mama bear and he has the vision. Alright. I take it home that night. Wait til morning and get the prayer printed off. Let's get to work. 6 hours of nonstop stencil, outline, and burning. I missed majority of the wake but it was done. At this point, because of my mask and burning on plyboard (I do not suggest) my throat is killing me. My own fault cause I need new filters for my mask. What a panic I tell ya. In the end, I was glad to have just this one small piece involved in aunty Hazel's funeral.
Hazel was one of those aunts who welcomed all the village kids into her home lol we would go sledding in their giant field. Watch Saturday morning cartoons on their fancy TV. They always had snacks for us haha. Even had the occasional WWF matches in the basement. Oh my and the jamborees! We'd all pile into the ol tahoe and head off to town. She treated all of us like her own and went on these grand old adventures. As a sheltered kid, I wasn't allowed to stay with many folks, but Hazel was one of the few. I'm thankful for her because she helped make part of my childhood what it was.
I know it's a bit late and the funeral didn't go as planned, but thank you Aunty. May you finally get the peace you were looking for.
