Shirley and Vicki are sad to announce the passing of an incredibly special person, Sheila Collier. Aside from her caring nature and fun personality, Sheila was well known through her knitting (socks in particular), quilting, and especially her introducing a Teddy bear hospital to the Similkameen Valley, where she lovingly repaired our beloved stuffed companions for over a decade.
Sheila was so excited to bring her Teddy Bear hospital to Hedley for 2026. As we planned, she received news that noone wants to hear. Moving forward with her amazing attitude that we've all come to admire, Sheila forged ahead helping to plan Hedley's Teddy bear picnic, even when it came to be from her hospital bed, and mistyped words in our group chats as her fingers failed.
She felt honoured to have the hospital named after her, though the honour was absolutely all ours. She beamed at the hospital sign we had printed. With Shirley bedside, they saw the picnic unfold through texts and photos. On Monday, the local news again printed stories of Sheila's Teddy bear hospital, and on Thursday, Sheila gently left us, Al by her side to say goodbye.

Vicki and Shirley would love to thank everyone that supported the First Hedley Teddy Bear Picnic❣️❣️❣️

A special thankyou to Hedley’s good friend and Teddy Bear doctor. Although unable to attend in person, we were able to share updates and pictures at her bedside. For being our greatest inspiration and behind the scenes support and guidance we thank you Sheila Collier!! You have trained your nurses and medics beautifully! Your Teddy Bear Hospital was happy to treat bears and all cuddly stuffies as you had directed. We thank you for the honour you’ve entrusted to us!
Your inspiration helped make our first Hedley Teddy Bear Picnic an overwhelming success! We share great gratitude for our sponsors: Neighbourhood Small Grants, Upper Similkameen Indian Band, Pineview Fire Protection Services, Hedley Heritage Museum Society, Hedley Centre, Hedley Country Market, Jodel Music Woman, Hedley Community Club, The Grand Union Café, Hedley Library, Hedley Volunteer Fire Department, Hedley Grace Church, and East Quail.
