Folk Art, Outsider Art and Self-taught Art Featuring folk, self-taught and outsider art from the U. S. It is located less than one hour east of Halifax.

and Canada, with an emphasis on the works of Nova Scotia folk artists past and present. Opened in 2000, the Black Sheep Gallery is situated in a converted 1200 square foot fish plant on the shore of Jeddore Harbour. The work of over 40 Nova Scotia folk artists past and present are featured, as well as a selection of folk art from Ontario and Quebec. We also offer the work of several well known folk, self taught and outsider artists from the United States including Rev. Howard Finster, James Harold Jennings, Sybil Gibson, S.L. Jones, Mary T. Smith and David Butler. Nova Scotia artists shown at the gallery include Joe Norris, Maud Lewis, Collins Eisenhauer, Joe Sleep, Eddie Mandaggio, Clarence "Bubby" Mooers, Cyril Hirtle, Phyllis Cosman, Barry Colpitts, Charlie Tanner, and Leo, Ransford and Bradford Naugler.

This wonderful angel carving highlights the work of Nova Scotia folk artist Phyllis Cosman. Working from her kitchen table, she maintained a limited output that makes each creation rare. Her hand-carved pieces feature distinctive angelic faces, and four of her carvings, representing most of her work from 1994, are part of the permanent collection at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. This piece is shared exclusively to showcase her artistry and is not for sale.

We found this painting at Katharine Mulherin’s Queen West gallery in 2010. Katharine had an incredible eye for talent, and this was a piece she believed in. The striking imagery and the pull of the blue create a powerful presence that stays with you, making it one of our favourites.

If you remember the artist from those years at Mulherin’s spaces, we’d be grateful for any insight. This painting has lived with us for a long time, and we’d love to reunite it with the artist’s name.

Leroy Almon Sr was a central figure in southern folk art shaped by church life and the community around him. His work often carried the themes he lived with and the devotional spirit that guided much of his carving. This angel is beautifully mounted in a shadow box.

Look at the tension in these faces! Nova Scotia folk artist Elmer Killen had an amazing gift for making his wooden figures feel completely alive and deeply expressive.
In Reading Circle, you can practically hear the friction. Are those two men even listening to the story, or are they completely tuned out and debating a recent football game instead? Either way, she is staring them down with absolute determination to reclaim her room!

This little resting lamb is hand carved by the legendary Bradford Naugler, a powerhouse name in Nova Scotia folk art. Bradford comes from a famous family of Canadian carvers and is known for putting a vibrant, whimsical spin on everyday animals.

This Donald Manzer monkey feels like it’s been caught in the act, and look at that cute little tail. Donald never repeated an image; every carving stood on its own, from fiddling cats to figures that appeared only once in his hands.
Finding a Manzer is rare. Finding one with this much charm is a gift.

There is something deeply comforting about looking back at the places that first shaped us. When Wilhelm Hess painted Morning in the Alps, he was doing more than capturing a landscape; he was capturing a feeling of home. Every warm wash of golden light and rustic fence line feels like a personal memory of Germany.

This vibrant painting is by late Cape Breton folk artist Wilhelm Hess. Hess emigrated from Germany to Nova Scotia in 1951. He worked as a farm laborer, painting two beautiful murals inside a home in Dunvegan. The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia actually removed one of those wall paintings to feature in their Interior Decorative Painting exhibition. He later opened a toy shop in Inverness, where he famously nailed his colorful paintings to the exterior walls.
The artwork captures his signature naive style, depicting a serene water view. A charming white church with a bright red steeple overlooks a rustic wooden dock extends into the calm blue water, while apple trees heavy with ripe fruit frame the shoreline.

When we bought this piece from Ransford Naugler, he told us that while every other folk artist was busy carving dogs, he decided to make a hot dog instead. Doesn't that little face covered in mustard and ketchup completely brighten your day?
