What began in 2000 by a group of students from Lakeside Academy, Buchans, has become the largest music festival of its kind in Central Newfoundland, Canada. It is a showcase of talent of students from grades 7-12 along with special guest performers and music workshops. Until now, Jane Collins Academy, Hare Bay, has hosted the event which the whole school community and corporate sponsors have eagerly supported. This year has thrown us a curve ball and we managed to hit it out of the park online with Virtual Schoolstock 2020 going ahead with participants sharing their music videos or performing live. People signed in and watched from all over the online world with nearly 3000 views. When asked how I thought it all went, my response was surprising even to me “10o times better than what I had expected.” We had three song writing workshops and the usual SchoolStock T-Shirts for sale. GREAT NEWS: With my pending retirement in June of this year, someone has come up to the plate and offered to put all their efforts into keeping the Schoolstock spirit alive. So, next year look for details coming from Hayley Taylor of Smallwood Academy, Gambo who will be hosting SchoolStock 2021. Barbara Rideout (present school principal of Lakeside Academy) and I (Rodney Vokey, present organizer of SchoolStock) have passed the bat to you Hayley and now it’s your turn to hit it out of the park.
