I'm delighted to announce that I'm going to be giving a richly illustrated talk on Zoom on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Savings Time on "Being A Model Photographer." I'm inviting you to join. If you are interested please mark the date and time in your calendar. I'll put the link in the comments.

My title has two meanings: being a photographer who shoots models, and being a photographer who models good practices.

I’ll cover how I get connected with models, my sources of inspiration, my ways of choosing venues, how I get wardrobe, who I bring as a team, what is included in my typical shoot, and what I do with the pictures afterwards.

When it comes to being a photographer who follows good practices I’ll talk about the process of planning and preparing, being respectful, and caring for the model and the rest of the team. I’ll provide a sample Contract between model and photographer and a sample Call Sheet for the team.

The opportunity to do this comes from one of my photography teachers at Mohawk College, Jorj Takacs. Jorj hosts a weekly Zoom meeting Wednesday evenings. I am honoured to have been asked.

On my personal page, I entered another instalment in my encouragement of Canadians to travel within our vast country, this time about northern British Columbia. One of the places Gabriel and I visited there in 2018 was Pouce Coupe, near Dawson Creek. At Pouce Coupe there's this well preserved huge wooden trestle railway bridge. On one of the days Gabriel were there at the bridge with did a photoshoot with Gattlyn Gunn. Here are a few pictures from that shoot.

On my personal page I've been posting ideas for travel within Canada as opposed to the United States. I've been suggesting travel within Canada, as a way of expressing resistance to US President Trump's aggression towards our country. In my post today I talked about Saskatchewan as a destination and one place there was the Great Sandhills.

It's been a joyful experience to work with Amarie first as a Hair and Make-up Artist (HMUA) and then as a model, starting in the summer of 2023. It was my privilege to be the photographer who did her first dedicated shoot as a model, and we've had four more shoots since then. Amarie is a lovely person, multi-talented in esthetics, and an overcomer.

Recently Eclair magazine did a spread of our pictures from an urban fashion shoot in Toronto, accompanied by an interview with Amarie. I'm proud and happy to be associated with Amarie's journey.

In August of 2023 Mina and I planned out a high fashion photoshoot in Toronto that I consider worked out to be among the most successful shoots I've ever had. Mina recruited the hair and make up artist, the amazing Milad Taherzadeh, and brought all the fashions. I recruited an assistant Ahmad Karim and planned out the venues. Mother Nature provided a beautiful day. We've had five publications from that shoot, all five of which earned us covers.

This particular photo was published in Eclair, Vol 49, Issue 226, December 2023. In fact it was the cover!

In an editorial "North of the 49th" Stylecruze published a photo essay of mine featuring Chilliwack, British Columbia freelance model Kristine. "North of the 49th" referred to the facts that Kristine lives just north of the US border with Canada and was only a couple of weeks from her 50th birthday when we did the shoot at the end of May, 2023.

The joyful abandon you see in this photo reflects the mood of the day when it felt like absolutely everything and everyone was on a high, the weather, the locations, the energy, the imagination, and the creativity. It was one of those photographic halcyon days that you don't forget.

Louisa and I collaborated on a Juliet themed shoot over two days in Stratford, Ontario using wardrobe rented from the Stratford Festival Costume Warehouse. In preparation for the shoot I re-read Shakespeare's play and watched on YouTube a movie version I hadn't seen before, Carlo Carlei's 2013 production starring Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld. I've seen theatrical productions of the play at least three times at Stratford over the years.

Romeo and Juliet is a story that grips me, penetrates me to my core. I can't see it, read it or sometimes even think about it, without strong emotions and usually tears. It is such a powerful metaphor for the strength of love and the destructive power of hate and vengeance. It's a message that though declaimed from countless stages for four hundred years has failed to find purchase with the human race, for we keep on hating and seeking vengeance, isolating and killing.

In this picture from our second day of shooting, Louisa lies in her drug-induced death-like state to avoid having to marry the man dictated to her by her rigid father. The father wanted at all costs to avoid his daughter, a Capulet, from marrying Romeo, a Montague. Juliet's plan, proposed to her by the sympathetic Friar Laurence, was that she would be in that comatose state through the day of the planned wedding and then awaken when Romeo would be summoned to retrieve her. The plan goes awry: Romeo believes Juliet is actually dead; he takes a fatal poison; Juliet awakens to find her beloved dead; she takes Romeo's dagger and kills herself.

At the conclusion of the play, after a total of five young people have died as result of the stupid, obstinate feuding between the warring Capulet and Montague families, the Prince of their town shouts at the patriarchs: "Where be these enemies? Capulet! Montague! See what a scourge is laid upon your hate!"

I have only superlatives for Ciara Antoski.

The magazine O***m Red in which this photo was featured continues to publish despite its home city of Kyiv, Ukraine being under Russian bombardment.

Ciara's pose symbolizes for me O***m Red's--and all Ukrainians'-- reach for life.

As an end of year review, I'm proud to present tear sheets of most of the front covers of the magazines which did cover stories on submissions from me in 2022. Not included are covers where the magazine didn't provide tear sheets or where the photographs would not pass Facebook's community standards.

These covers are a tribute to some of the wonderful models, hair and make up artists and the one invaluable assistant with whom I've worked. The models are: Erin Carnie, Ciara Antoski, Dane Halo, Christelle Flow, Bara Amin, Cassandra Miranda, Charlene Mensah, Paige McGrath, Kaye Foley, Sophia Fremis, Mackenzie Kean, Andie Lavictoire and Christiana Ouellette. The hair and make up artists are: Aleksandra Stanojevic, Amarie Knight, Izzy Irizarry, Leslee Martin and Ashlee Rose Lyman. The one invaluable assistant is my loyal friend John-Michael Lelievre.

Every one of these covers represents hours of work, tons of fun, and priceless memories. Photographically, it has been a fabulous year.

My new friend Shirin Kordi hired me to do a photoshoot with her and her family in celebration of her 40th birthday. It was a fun time. Other than the Nerf guns at the end, Shirin orchestrated her own and all the family's wardrobe, and all the props including the rose flower bed and numbers "4" and "0."

Doing a photoshoot is a wonderful way to celebrate milestones, or just celebrate the love of family. It's fun and the memories are priceless.
