From Xi Xu: Delighted to be in Kim Echlin's issue of the Hamilton Arts & Letters Magazine 15th anniversary issue (theme: "My Country is the World") with a reprint of "Les Estrangers," my ekphrastic essay from INTERRUPTIONS, which I co-authored with photographer David Clarke. And it's a special thrill to be in the lineup with several former MFA students in the section collected & edited by Michaela Anchan on pandemic mothers around the globe. Check it out.

Les Estrangers INTRODUCTION: “Les Estrangers is excerpted from Interruptions with photographs by David Clarke and essays by Xu Xi (Hong Kong University Press, 2016). The essay is rooted in the tradition of contemporary ekphrastic writing in which a writer creates a literary response in order to co...

READ IT!
In 1922, the famed author and hunter of man-eating tigers, Major William Mohan of India, receives an invitation to Ireland from none other than William Butler Yeats and Lord Dunsany, ostensibly as a literary visit, but in actuality to rid their part of the Irish countryside of a mysterious wolf-like creature — the Cu-Sith of legend. Skeptical, but eager to leave India given potential legal troubles, Mohan accepts the invitation. Thus begins a globe-spanning adventure taking place in Tanganyika in Eastern Africa, the India-Nepal border, England and Ireland. SHIKARI (hunter) guest stars some of the greatest literary figures from the past century, and involves two-thousand year old secret organizations, proto-Nazi groups, and occult societies such as The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Thrilled to have such a thoughtful review of the FNCR shortlisted Go Down Odawa Way from the fine folks at Hamilton Arts & Letters Magazine. Book reviews can be relatively difficult to receive today. Extremely grateful for the attention and consideration of my work by Bird and HAL.
