Thank you to our pal in Alberta for a fine review of "Ain't Wasting Time", the new release from Nicky T and the Snake Charmers.

From the opening guitar notes of Magic Sam’s “That’s All I Need,” Nicky T and the Snake Charmers had me by the ears.

Nothing across Ain’t Wasting Time led me to believe I was mistaken: this is rockin’ blues, the style favoured by those of us who appreciate George Thorogood as much as Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, whose “Lead Me On” is a further highlight of the recording. “Blues with a feeling,” to quote one of the songs herein.

A fiery quartet—Nicholas Tabarias (guitar and vox), Pete Berg (drums), Frank Greenhalgh (bass), and Andy Szymanski (keys)—augmented by guests, Nicky T and the Snake Charmers are a veteran outfit who know how to entertain.

Emerging out of the Detroit-Windsor blues community, Ain’t Wasting Time appears to be the group’s second release and it is a blaster. “Feel Like a Hundred,” co-written by Berg, is simply a great song, rich in lyrical (“Feel like a Hundred in a Million Dollar World…”) and musical hooks with Szymanski’s piano given prominence.

Ronnie Earl, with whom Nicky T worked across several years and albums, provides a guitar solo on “The Glass,” possibly the album’s finest original. Greg Nagy, the song’s co-writer with Nicky T, takes the lead vocal spot here and “Lead Me On.” Slowing things, “Guess Who,” which also features Nagy, is another standout, a country-blues song of longing from B. B. King.

The title track is a ten-minute-plus opus, a showcase for the core-four, with Nicky T sounding especially connected to the song’s lyrical message: “I ain’t wasting no time, I’m surely in my prime; I can see the light of day, shining down, shining down in every way.” While not radio friendly given its length, it is a terrific performance, as is the more concise and absolute jumpin’ “Waiting on the Sunshine.”

Magic Sam (Sam Maghett) is toasted on Nicky T’s original “Thank You Magic Sam,” an instrumental where Tabarias allows himself to really let loose on electric guitar, with “Life on Life’s Terms” providing a dollop of realism to close the eleven-track album.

Produced, engineered, and mixed by Josh Ford, the album sounds great, and thanks to Kate Moss’ art design and Theresa Szymanski’s cover photograph, looks great, too.

I don’t get to encounter many standout blues albums these days; Ain’t Wasting Time is one. Worth your attention, I do believe.
