In grade school it started with threads that Serafina Thoma’s grandmother gave her left over from her sewing. She would macrame bracelets and trade with friends. In high school she made frequent visits to Walmart and Michael's craft store to buy as many different colours of thread as she possibly could. She would constantly make bracelets in class and on her lunch break. When 1st year University came, Serafina lived in residence and would take the subway in the evening to The Toronto H**p Company where she purchased some spools of h**p, purely out of curiosity. She started making bracelets out of h**p instead of thread, and noticed how much thicker and stronger they were. This progressed into conducting research into the many uses and benefits of h**p, and eventually lead to completely making the switch over to h**p cord & twine for her jewelry. In 2014 H**ptingz was launched, and Serafina would carry all the bracelets and necklaces on a clip on her backpack, bringing them to electronic music festivals such as Veld, Electric Forest, Bestival and Electric Island in order to make trades and sales. Some people refer to her as the H**p Queen. Now Serafina is a vendor at arts festivals all over the Hamilton area, participating in events such as Supercrawl, Art crawls, Festival of Friends, Sound of Music Festival, and Punk Rock Flea Markets. She has expanded her creations to sculpting pendants with clay, working with recycled materials such as bullet casings, and making crystal diffuser bracelets.
In 2018, the free market space at Supercrawl was in jeopardy. Serafina had been a vendor in that space in 2016 and 2017, but in 2018 she had been accepted as an official vendor. Although the space being unavailable did not conflict with H**ptingz, she felt she had a duty to speak up. Serafina was featured on CHCH News for her actions taken in order to protect fellow independent artists in Hamilton. Her youtube video went mini-viral through the help of the art crawl community, and Supercrawl announced the space was secured.
