The Cotton Factory is pleased to announce Hamilton-based visual artist Natalie Hunter as the recipient of the 2026 Nordic Artist Exchange (NAX) residency.

Sponsored by the Cotton Factory, Hunter will travel to Tallinn, Estonia, in October 2026 for a four-week residency focused on artistic research, material experimentation, and the development of a new body of work exploring industrial heritage, labour histories, and the relationship between light, architecture, and memory.

Working in an expanded field of photography, Hunter combines analogue film photography, sculpture, transparent materials, and immersive installation to create works that examine time, perception, and the emotional residue of industrial landscapes. Her recent projects, Of Rust and Rays and In The Shadow of Rust, were exhibited in What We Inherit at the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre in 2025, exploring legacies of labour and family lineage through photo-based installations.

During the residency, Hunter will work site-responsively throughout Tallinn, drawing parallels between Hamilton’s industrial history and Estonia’s post-industrial architecture and manufacturing heritage. Using analogue 120mm and 35mm film photography, handmade colour filters, and locally sourced industrial materials, she will produce a series of sculptural photographic works that investigate how sunlight, material, and urban space shape lived experience.

“Tallinn and Hamilton share surprising historical connections through industry, labour, and evolving urban landscapes,” says Hunter. “As the daughter of a steelworker raised in Hamilton, I’m interested in how industrial histories continue to shape communities, identities, and environments across generations and cultures.”

Hunter’s residency plan includes research visits to the Fotografiska Tallinn, meetings with Estonian artists and cultural workers, and collaborations with local printers and fabricators in Tallinn’s Arts Union building. Throughout the four weeks, she will photograph industrial sites, process and print film locally, and construct sculptural armatures from regional materials, including metal and wood.

While the residency will serve as the foundation for this new body of work, Hunter intends to continue and complete the project upon returning to Hamilton. Working with Smokestack Studio, she will expand the series for future public presentation and exhibition at the Cotton Factory. The resulting works will place Hamilton and Tallinn into dialogue as post-industrial cities shaped by labour, migration, architecture, and environmental change. The Nordic Artist Exchange program supports Hamilton artists in developing international artistic relationships and research opportunities abroad while strengthening cultural connections between Hamilton and Nordic and Baltic communities.

The Cotton Factory is pleased to announce that Najmeh Baghishani has been selected as the next Artist-in-Residence, beginning in November 2025.

As part of her six-month residency, Najmeh will develop a new body of paintings exploring ideas of belonging, transformation, and connection within the context of place.

Having lived in Hamilton for two years, Najmeh reflects on how immersion in a new environment reshapes perception and emotion — how unfamiliarity softens over time and small connections grow into belonging. During her residency, she will focus her attention on the Cotton Factory itself — its architecture, history, people, and atmosphere — as both subject and metaphor.

“The building, with its long history and current role as a creative hub, provides a unique possibility for creating a body of paintings in which my own presence interacts with the environment,” says Najmeh . “Over time, the Cotton Factory will also become a metaphor for the city I have entered — a symbolic site through which I can explore belonging and identity.”

Painting will be the central medium of the project, supported by writing and photography as tools for documentation and reflection. The residency provides Najmeh with a dedicated studio space and creative community — an environment that will directly inform the work she produces.

Originally from Iran, Najmeh Baghishani holds an MA in Visual Communication from the Iran University of Art (2014) and currently serves as a Docent at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, where she leads guided tours and facilitates public engagement with contemporary and historical art. Her professional background includes teaching graphic design, photojournalism, and visual content creation, as well as freelance work in photography and design.

Through this residency, Najmeh aims to deepen her relationship with Hamilton’s creative community while sharing her own experience of cultural transition and artistic renewal.
“Each interaction with the building, its objects, and its people will become a meaningful layer in the process,” she says. “Ultimately, the work is about connection — finding home through art.”

The Cotton Factory is proud to welcome Estonian artist Kadri Toom as the newest recipient of the Nordic Artist Exchange (NAX) residency. Based in Tallinn, Estonia, Toom brings a dynamic and contemporary approach to printmaking, combining graphic art, photography, painting, and installation to create richly textured, collage-like works that explore spatial awareness and the landscapes of daily life. Toom will join us in October, 2025.

Kadri Toom’s practice centres on experimental and alternative graphic techniques, often engaging with themes of the built environment, urban structures, and how contemporary people interact with space through both digital and physical experiences. Her works use expressive colour and precise linework, challenging traditional forms of printmaking and pushing the boundaries of contemporary graphic expression.

“Canada has a long and consistent tradition of graphic art,” says Toom. “With international graphic artists gathering here in 2025, I feel this is the right time and place to be experimenting, learning, and sharing ideas.”

During her residency, Toom will explore local architecture, particularly the contrast between neoclassical structures and new developments, through pinhole photography and photo-drawing collages. She plans to collaborate with Smokestack Studio, a contemporary print and photo facility in Hamilton, and immerse herself in the creative community at the Cotton Factory.

Her program includes practical experimentation, skill-sharing, and furthering her education through local partnerships and artist exchanges. The residency reflects the core goals of the Nordic Artist Exchange: to foster international collaboration, promote innovation in visual arts, and build enduring cultural bridges between Canada and Northern Europe.

Toom holds a master’s degree in Graphic Arts from the Estonian Academy of Arts and has exhibited extensively in Estonia and abroad. She was named Graphic Artist of the Year by the Estonian Association of Graphic Artists in 2021 and has received multiple prestigious awards, including the Estonian Cultural Endowment Annual Award and the Wiiralt Prize. Her work has been featured in international residencies, exhibitions, and collaborative art projects across Europe.

The Cotton Factory and its partners in Hamilton and Taillin look forward to supporting Kadri’s creative journey throughout her residency and to sharing her work with the public through upcoming exhibitions and events.
