➡️ It’s been a while, hasn’t it?

I have both good news and bad news.

The bad news: I’ve been advised to undergo decompression surgery. However, my current situation isn’t ideal for recovery afterward due to several personal reasons.

At the moment, my decision hinges on this very factor: I can’t proceed with the surgery yet because I need a safe and suitable place to recover. I’m hoping to raise enough funds through various side hustles to help change the trajectory of my life.

Additionally, I’m waiting to get an ultrasound on my thyroid, as multiple lumps were found while checking if my syrinx had grown. (FYI: it has.)

The good news: I’ve read that more than 90% of all thyroid nodules are benign (non-cancerous), which is very relieving.

More good news: I’m back and ready to make ice-dyed products! 👕 ✨🌈If you’re interested in getting an item, just send me a message.

So I’ve been MIA. I did a huge transition with my life but also with my hair. Change is good, and I am absolutely loving all the different shades of red I’ve experimented with. ❣️ My left hand has been really sore for what feels like forever, but almost everywhere else (neuropathic pain wise) feels really great due to my infusions. 🥇 💃🏼I can’t make things how I used to. This is to find a healthy balance with my time, new passions and “spoons” 🥄 However, I’m still able to do ice dye requests. ❣️ Thank you to everyone past and present who has supported me. Genuinely and truly appreciated!!

ABOUT SYRINGOMYELIA⤵️

Syringomyelia is a disorder in which a fluid-filled cyst (called a syrinx) forms within the spinal cord. Over time, the syrinx can get bigger and can damage the spinal cord and compress and injure the nerve fibers that carry information to the brain and from the brain to the rest of the body.

Some of the symptoms but no two cases are the same:
🔹Curving of the spine, called scoliosis
🔹Changes in or loss of bowel and bladder function
🔹Heavy sweating
🔹Not being able to feel hot and cold in the fingers, hands, arms, and upper chest
🔹Loss of reflexes
🔹Muscle stiffness that may make it hard to walk
🔹Muscle weakness, especially in the arms, hands, and shoulders
🔹Feeling numbness, tingling, burning, or piercing
🔹Pain in the neck, shoulders, and sometimes arms and hands
🔹Paralysis (in severe cases)
🔹Headaches
🔹Swings in blood pressure levels
🔹Twitches, or involuntary muscle contractions
🔹Uncoordinated movements

WHY DO I RAISE AWARENESS?⤵️
Once I experienced locked-in syndrome, which my specialist believes was due to Syringomyelia and over exhausting myself. All I could move was my eyes and it was one of the scariest moments of my life. So now I always remind myself to pace myself and show myself as much grace as I do others! Let this be a reminder don’t judge a book by it’s cover!

I’ve been super busy planning for Syringomyelia Awareness Month in May. I’m super pumped to say that I’ve managed to get 9 landmarks all across Canada to light up BLUE. 💙✨ For those who are wondering.. why, what & how?

WHY:
Once upon a time I thought I needed emergency surgery, at the time I wasn’t aware of the signs for me in particular…. so I called 911. Upon the paramedics arriving they knew what Chiari Malformation was, but they had no clue what Syringomyelia was. This is why I’m so passionate about advocating and raising awareness.

WHAT:

Syringomyelia (sear-IN-go-my-EEL-ya) is a disorder in which a cyst forms within the spinal cord. This cyst, called a syrinx, expands and elongates over time, destroying a portion of the spinal cord from its centre and expanding outward. As a syrinx widens it compresses and injures nerve fibres that carry information from the brain to the extremities.
Damage to the spinal cord often leads to progressive weakness in the arms and legs, stiffness in the back, shoulders, arms, or legs, and chronic, severe pain. Other symptoms may include headaches, a loss of the ability to feel extremes of hot or cold (especially in the hands), and loss of bladder and other functions. Each individual experiences a different combination of symptoms depending on where in the spinal cord the syrinx forms and how far it extends.

HOW:

Diagnostic imaging has significantly increased the number of Syringomyelia cases detected in the beginning stages of the disorder. Physicians primarily use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose Syringomyelia.

I’ll be announcing the landmarks that are going blue closer to the end of April! Stay tuned. 😉
