From the Bottom of the Inland Sea: Layers of Time & Memory - Willow.
Once the bottom of an inland sea, the top of the escarpment- the shoreline. Now the place where willows grow, graves lie in silence, neighbourhoods bustle, cars climb up the highway, hikers hike, sewers sew. My mother immigrated from the Netherlands and sewed. The sound of the sewing machine a memory of her struggle to survive and care for 4 children without a partner in an adopted country. The front layer acrylic on a piece of laminate from her machine.

I love the bustle and colours of rooftops against the backdrop of these mountains in Omagari. The earth knows and remembers. Kaze ga onaji desu. The wind is the same wind across the earth.

I got caught up in exploring the stillness, heat, moody sky, the textures of this temple in Okinawa.

Working on a series I am calling- “From the bottom of the inland sea”. Below what is now called the Niagara Escarpment, layers of time and memory have ebbed and flowed for centuries. So many lives have been ripped apart, and over time stitched back together. This piece is painted on a broken piece of laminate wood that was part of my mother’s antique sewing machine.

A couple of my pieces will be in this show.https://www.facebook.com/share/1F13g8GdAM/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Exploring ideas of time and memory, history and who told it, migration and living on this earth. This little piece of laminate is from my mother’s sewing machine. How my parents stitched out a life in “Canada”, from the Netherlands, not realizing it’s foundation was on grief and lives torn apart. The Niagara Escarpment knows.

Calling it done. This one was a process getting to a place that felt right for the wood and for me. The endurance and resilience of earth is still what I think about most.

Still deep in this piece - layering paint, charcoal, wood, fabric and fragments of memory. A friend See Laurie Sew visited recently and we realized we are exploring the same themes of time, grief and memory.

Finally done.
