[The images are an excerpt of our zine on q***r care during the AIDS crisis (in the right order this time). The full zine is available in our linktree.]

Last month, we celebrated the fact that we had raised the funds needed to purchase our home at 2177 Gottingen st, through our bond campaign, municipal grants, and individual fundraising. Part of that celebration was honouring a few people who had made a particularly large contribution towards this purchase: our former landlords the Schlechs, who sold us the building at a terrific price and encouraged us to buy it, and Dr. Bob Fredrickson, who made the single largest donation (of $450,000) that allowed us to realize our dream (and dream even bigger with some renovations!)

It also happened that Dr. Bob and Wally Schlech were the two main AIDS doctors during the first two decades of the AIDS crisis in Nova Scotia. So, as a thank you for their contributions, we created this zine documenting q***r care during the AIDS epidemic. It also contains a bit of history about our building at 2177 Gottingen, and its contributions towards care for the marginalized within Halifax.
This is our history, as an institution within the q***r community and as an anti-capitalist organization committed to being an accessible third space where everyone can access the arts and community. The following is an excerpt of the zine, that deals with the contributions to this history from the folks that helped us with the building purchase.

We have some terrific news about our campaign to buy 2177 Gottingen St. We have recently received a very generous donation from an individual donor that will make it possible for us to purchase the building! This donor, Dr. Bob Fredrickson, is a local hero within the q***r community, having been the primary care doctor for most HIV/AIDS patients in Halifax in the first decades of the epidemic, and then went on to be a resource for trans health. We are honored to receive such a large donation from such a respected community member.

We invite you to celebrate the purchase of the Radstorm Building with us on Sunday, May 25 from 1-5pm at RadStorm. There will be tours of the building, food, music, screenprinting demos, and more! This is also a chance for us to celebrate all of the people who made this possible.

We want to thank everyone who supported us in our campaign to own our forever home. We would never have been able to achieve this dream without the support from our community, including Dr. Bob Fredrickson, our investors in the community bonds campaign, the contribution from the HRM, RadStorm members who worked so hard to make this happen, and RadStorm’s incredibly supportive building owners, Walter & Mary Schlech. As a space that exists for and because of our community, we’re immensely grateful for the incredible support that helped make this moment possible. Now let’s celebrate!
