TONIGHT FROM 6-8! AT CARBON ARC! ADMISSION IS FREE AND OPEN TO ALL!

AFCOOP has partnered with Fleapit Cinema to present an in-conversation with visiting filmmakers and collaborators, Kalil Haddad and Ryan Steel. Coming from Toronto and Winnipeg respectively, these two filmmakers have been carving out a name for themselves in the independent film scene of Canada, and are here in The Great Harbour!

HIFF showcased a retrospective of Steel’s films back in 2022. Only twenty-three at the time, he had already developed an exploratory and playful body of work informed by a DIY ethic and obsession with hazy analog images. His films have gone on to play at Rotterdam, Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, Vancouver International Film Festival, and more. He is currently editing his first feature film “MEAT.”

Haddad is an experimental filmmaker that has been drumming up excitement for his radical approach to form and depiction of q***r subjectivities that have been interlaced with meditations on gender, class and race. He has made over a dozen short films, and his works appear in the collections of The Film-makers’ Cooperative, Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre, and Vtape.

Last night, Fleapit Cinema presented a special double feature of YOU SORTA KNOW IT’S GONNA END, the brand new B2B videomixtape featuring ten classic shorts by Ryan Steel and Kalil Haddad, followed by HE NEVER DIES, a four-film cycle by Kalil Haddad, concluding with an afterparty featuring DJ sets by Ryan Steel and ENDLESSS.

AFCOOP has partnered with Fleapit Cinema to present an in-conversation with visiting filmmakers and collaborators, Kalil Haddad and Ryan Steel. On Thursday, June 11th: Fleapit Cinema is kicking off the summer by presenting a very special double feature of YOU SORTA KNOW IT’S GONNA END, the brand new B2B videomixtape featuring ten classic shorts by Ryan Steel and Kalil Haddad, followed by HE NEVER DIES, a four-film cycle by Kalil Haddad, concluding with an afterparty RAVE featuring DJ sets by Ryan Steel and ENDLESSS. The Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative’s Grants for Filmmakers are now open for submissions!

With grants available to members & non-members, Nova Scotian and non-Nova Scotian residents, there is sure to be a grant that will inspire your next creative project.

• ANALOGUE FILM GRANT
• INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS GRANT

You’ve heard of the Criterion Closet, but what about AFCOOP’s Analog Alley?

AFCOOP welcomed our spring intern, Chloë, into the co-op at the end of April. She will be joining us for the rest of May, working with our technical coordinator, Cody, and communications coordinator, Brielle.


Chloë Nguyen-Drury (she/they) is a Kjipuktuk/Halifax-based writer, filmmaker, and soon-to-be NSCC Screen Arts graduate. Her background is in creative writing and community arts and culture programs. With an interest in genre, documentary, and experimental filmmaking, their projects employ themes of discomfort, isolation, gender and sexuality, environment, nature, and culture.

As an Industry Partner, AFCOOP has the ability to nominate one production in the narrative stream and one production in the documentary stream of the Telefilm Talent to Watch program.

This national program supports emerging filmmakers with producing their first feature films (narrative or documentary) by providing funding and mentorship support throughout the process.

Teams nominated by AFCOOP will then re-apply to Telefilm to be considered in the national competition.

The deadline to apply for consideration of a nomination from AFCOOP is extended to Monday, April 6th, 2026 by 11:59 PM AST.

The offices of the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative will be closed from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM today, March 4th to attend the Rally for Arts, Heritage, Culture, and Community at the Province House.

There are rallies today across the province: Wolfville, Annapolis Royal, Truro, Yarmouth, Shelburne, Sydney, Antigonish, Liverpool, and New Glasgow.

In Kjipuktuk (Halifax), a grounding space will be available at the Turret Arts Space Society .space, 1588 Barrington St, who are hosting a “Phone Blitz” from 12-1:30 PM. They are opening the building to the public and providing water, masks, and phone scripts.
