Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra

Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra Youth Orchestra based out of Halifax, NS, comprised of the finest young musicians province-wide. The NSYO now boasts nearly 1000 alumni.

The Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1977. Working closely with the musicians of Symphony Nova Scotia, the NSYO has provided students with educational opportunities not available at any university, public school, or conservatory in the province for more than four decades. The Orchestra has been described by renowned professional conductors and musicians

as one of the finest in Canada. 85% of our alumni have gone on to jobs in music-related fields. Past Music Directors include: Robert Raines, Stan Fisher, Georg Tintner, Gregory Burton, and Dinuk Wijeratne. The NSYO's season runs from the end of August until the end of April, and includes a Summer Workshop.

We’re taking a look back at our final concert of the season with full hearts and ears ❤️

Led by Denise Grant, we brought our season to a vibrant close with a program full of colour, energy, and imagination! We featured our 2025/26 Concerto Competition winner Irain Quirós, who played beautifully.

Led by Denise Grant, we are bringing our season to a vibrant close with a program full of colour, energy, and imagination! On the program, we are featuring 2025/26 Concerto Competition winner Irain Quirós 🎻

Missy Mazzoli: Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres)
John Weinzweig: Round Dance
Malcolm Forsyth: Atayoskewin Suite

From cosmic soundscapes to rhythmic, folk-inspired energy, this concert is a full-on musical journey you won’t want to miss. Tickets: $30 | $10 students (HST included) and 12 & under attend FREE with an adult ticket.

In first place is Irain Quiros on violin 🎻 Our 1st runner up is Ilan Mendel on trombone and our 2nd runner up is Angel Wen on piano.

Community Spotlight: Domus Realty ✨

Our official Symphony Striders Team Sponsor, Domus Realty has been a steadfast and committed supporter of Symphony Nova Scotia, including the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, for over 20 years. But did you know they're also involved in supporting charitable organizations throughout our community via the Bright Futures program?

Since 2001, Domus agents have donated a fixed portion of their commissions to a charitable fund, contributing over $300,000 to local organizations working to build stronger communities.

Originally launched as A Home for Everyone, the initiative was reimagined and renamed Bright Futures in 2019, with a renewed focus on supporting and empowering youth. The mission of this fund is to ensure that every young person has a chance at a Bright Future by providing support, shelter, and opportunities to set them up for success. We are so grateful for the meaningful support offered to our NSYO musicians.
