We Never Set Out to Become a “Big Business.” We set out to build something that mattered, with people we cared about and wanted to see succeed.
More than 24 years ago, Sin on Skin began with a simple idea: create a tattoo studio where good artists could do good work, people could feel welcome, and clients could trust the person putting something permanent on their skin. There was no huge investment behind us, no corporate backing. No guarantee that we would still be here decades later, just hard work.
Like many small businesses, we learned as we went. We made mistakes. We adapted. We worked long days, figured things out as they came, and slowly built a reputation one client at a time, and Halifax became part of our story.
Over the years, downtown Halifax changed. Businesses came and went. Neighbourhoods changed. Trends in tattooing changed dramatically. Technology changed. The economy changed. We experienced some incredibly difficult years, including a pandemic that brought our industry to a complete standstill.
But we kept going.
We kept the doors open. We kept investing in the studio. Our clients believed in us enough to help support us through these unpredidented times; and we survived. We continue to bring talented artists together. Most importantly, we kept treating every client who walked through our doors as a person rather than a transaction. That philosophy has never really changed. A tattoo might take an hour, a day, or several sessions to create, but the reason someone gets tattooed can carry a lifetime of meaning. We've been trusted with first tattoos, family pieces, memorials, cover-ups, celebrations, restorations, ridiculous ideas, deeply personal stories, and everything in between.
We've watched nervous first-time clients walk through our doors and leave excited about their new tattoo. We've had clients return years later for their next piece. We've had people recommend us to their friends, their families, and eventually bring their own children. Those relationships are the real measure of our success.
Of course, we're proud of the recognition Sin on Skin has received over the years. We're proud of being a long-standing downtown Halifax studio and grateful whenever our community recognizes what we do and awards aren't why we're still here. We're still here because we genuinely care about tattooing and learning about the people and clients we meet.
We care about doing things properly. We care about creating a comfortable environment. We care about our artists having the freedom to grow and develop their craft. We care about giving clients an experience they can feel good about from the moment they walk in until long after their tattoo has healed.
And after more than two decades, we're still learning and improving.
That's one of the things we love most about being a small business. You never really arrive at the finish line. There is always another artist to learn from, another style to explore, another client to help, another challenge to overcome, and another reason to get better. When we look back, we're proud that something that started so simply became such a lasting part of Halifax.
Sin on Skin wasn't built overnight.
It was built appointment by appointment.
Client by client.
Artist by artist.
Year by year.
You show up. You work hard. You take care of your people. You take pride in what you do. You weather the difficult years and you celebrate the good ones; that's what being a small Canadian business means to us.
More than 24 years later, we're still here — still creating, still growing, still learning, and still proud to call Halifax home.
