Ballet Class with Joanna Lige, Rehearsal Director for Ballet Kelowna ✨

Open to pre-professional and professional dancers, recommended intermediate level or above

Students will experience a traditional ballet class structure, enhanced by the instructor’s professional insights and expertise. The workshop will also include an opportunity to learn repertoire from Ballet Kelowna’s taqəš and Other Works.

JOANNA LIGE

Joanna Lige is a graduate of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, a RAD Registered Teacher, a Certified Progressing Ballet Technique Instructor, a member of the Council of Ontario Dance and Drama Educators, and a member of the International Association of Dance Science and Medicine.

Ms. Lige grew up in Kelowna and has trained with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, The Banff Centre for the Arts, Peggy Baker Dance Projects, and SITI Theatre Company. She has performed work by Sharon Moore, Michael Trent, Danny Grossman, Julia Sasso, Peter Chin, José Limón, Bill James, and Sarah Chase.

✨ MEET THE CHOREOGRAPHER ✨

GUILLAUME CÔTÉ | Choreographer, Le Carnaval des Animaux

Guillaume Côté studied at Canada’s National Ballet School and joined The National Ballet of Canada in 1998. He quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2004. In 2013, in addition to his position as a Principal Dancer, Côté assumed the role of Choreographic Associate with The National Ballet of Canada, which he held until 2025. Eight of his pieces have entered the Company’s repertoire including Being and Nothingness, which was performed on an international tour to Russia. His first full-length ballet Le Petit Prince was presented by The National Ballet to sold-out houses in 2016. In 2018, Côté created in collaboration with the famed Director Robert Lepage, Frame by Frame, a new full-length evening. Côté is also the Artistic Director of the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur, one of the largest summer dance festivals in the country.

SIMONE ORLANDO | Creative Director and CEO, Ballet Kelowna

Simone Orlando completed her dance training at Canada’s National Ballet School and subsequently joined The National Ballet of Canada in 1989. In 1996, she joined Ballet British Columbia, where she danced for 13 years as one of the company’s most celebrated principal artists. Ms. Orlando’s choreographic explorations began in 1997. Praised for her mature and sensitive ideas, vision, musicality, and delineation of movement and space, she has received numerous commissions including those from Ballet BC, Toronto Dance Theatre, and Ballet Kelowna. During her tenure at Ballet Kelowna, Ms. Orlando has brought over 40 new works into the company’s repertoire.

CAMERON sinkʷə FRASER-MONROE | Choreographer, taqəš
Cameron sinkʷə Fraser-Monroe is a member of the Tla’amin First Nation. At three years old he started Ukrainian dancing in Vernon, BC. He was privileged to receive several years of training and performance with World Champion hoop dancer Dallas Arcand and studied grass dance with Elder Mollie Bono. Since graduating from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School on the RWB Alumni Scholarship, he has performed with many companies including Dancers of Damelahamid at Kia Mau Festival in New Zealand and the International Cervantino Festival, Jera Wolfe at Jacob’s Pillow Festival, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet at the National Arts Centre, the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada, and Ballet Kelowna.

MEET THE CHOREOGRAPHER 💫

ANDREA PEÑA ()

**Worth Arriving Early: Join us at 6:45PM for a Pre-Show Talk with the Andrea Peña, the creator of BOGOTÁ.

Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Andrea Peña is a multidisciplinary artist whose creative practice transverses the fields of art installation, choreography and design. Founded in 2014, Andrea Peña & Artists is recognized within Canada and internationally for her creation of critical, alternative and spatial universes that rupture our notions of a sensible humanity and engage in deep encounters between the physical body and the self. Peña’s highly intricate, vulnerable and raw choreography, is situated at a national and international scale presenting works in Hong Kong, Spain, India, Panama, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Canada. Peña has been highlighted with numerous awards for her conceptual and highly rigorous creations, recently including the 2018 Banff Arts Center's Clifford E. Lee Canadian Choreography award and the 2018 Hong Kong International Choreography Award.
