Now that this gift has been gifted, I can share the restoration! Started with a pretty beat up Misono santoku knife that I purchased as a gift for my mom. It went through quite a transformation process of going from a Western handle (with a bolster) to a Japanese style octagonal handle.

Involved some grinding, rust removal, reshaping of the blade (added a swoop to the heel for comfort), major sharpening, and some 3d modeling/designing.

The 3d printing came really handy making the dowel to join the handle instead of modifying a wooden dowel. And the case was a nice way to finish it up too.

The handle itself is made of cherry and a piece of Pernambuco. Pernambuco is a really cool wood and was lovely to work with. It is also the same wood violin bows are made of, which is really cool.

To be fair, it does fit the new spot very well. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hot of the press! Another brass trio!

Saint-Saëns composed this 3-minute a ca****la work for 4-part chorus in 1882. Its serene sounds are only briefly interrupted by a bit of gaiety. Justin Chiang has arranged the work for brass trio of Trumpet in B-flat, Horn and Trombone....and it works very, very well for intermediate level or highe...

Think I got it right this time! Erin wanted a shorter knife for opening up instruments and the first iteration was didn't work out. Used the tip of a vintage knife, a nice piece of red wood, and a spare ferrule I had in my parts bin.

Here's a project I did a couple weeks ago. A friend bought an old Mastercraft axe that needed some love. I fixed up the dents, reground the blade, smoothed out some wear on the handle, and sharpened up the blade. Beautiful old axe that holds a great edge. It was fun trying to balance out fixing it up while keeping some of its old rustic charm.

I received an old Conn 88h as part of a trade a little while ago. This one is made with Elkhart parts but made in Texas right after their move. Came with a nice ol crack in the bell which I've now patched! This horn is not a looker, but sure is a player.

Still getting settled in our new house! Really wanted to free up some counter space and decided to make a magnetic knife block for some of our knives (mostly Japanese knives).

Started with a beautiful piece of flamed maple (Erin brought this with her from LA.) This was probably an offcut used on a fancy instrument... Squared it all up, planed it flat, and then used a hand saw to rip it.

Used a combination of our drill press, chisel, knife, and router bit to clean up the channel.

Machined some trombone bracing and threaded it. Used a threaded insert and knurled k**b (from Lee Valley) to attach the insert to the block.

Glued my super strong neodymium magnets (only pinched myself once... Barely...) Into the channel.

The insert was then mounted to the wall, and the block then attached to that piece.

All in all, super happy with the final outcome! Will modify a couple more things for next time, but this one works! Probably wait at least a couple weeks before starting the next piece...

A tiny hole developed in one of my personal euphonium's slides a while back and I finally got around to patching it! Went with forming a small brass leaf to fit (still had some from some jewelry projects!).
