We are pleased to be partnering with The Centre for Art Tapes to welcome Allyson Mitchell to Halifax next week!
In conjunction with the presentation of Mitchell's large-scale mixed media installation 'Brain Child' at MSVU Art Gallery from June 13 to August 9, CFAT and MSVU Art Gallery are co-presenting 'Secret Caves, Blanket Forts and Dream Scores,' an artist talk and curated screening by Allyson Michell, at CFAT, on Saturday, June 13, from 1:00-3:00 pm.

The screening and talk look will address how artists use installation/sculpture, drawing, music, and animation to build strange worlds, emotional landscapes, and intimate visual languages.

Featuring short films and videos by Mitchell alongside Daniel Barrow, Karma Clarke-Davis, Theo Cuthand, Andrea Dorfman, Jesi Jordan, Annapurna Kumar, Christine Latham, Anita Lebeau, Amy Lockhart, James MacSwain, Amanda Strong, Leslie Supnet, and Theoretical Puppets, the program wanders through dreamscapes, private caves, hand-drawn rhythms, and animated forms of graphic narration and tale spinning that move between feeling, memory, and imagination.

Allyson Mitchell’s individual and collaborative practice spans sculpture, performance, installation, film, and comics engaging feminist and q***r politics through humour, excess, and critique. Her work has generated projects such as the fat activist collective Pretty Porky and Pi**ed Off, a coven of le***an feminist Sasquatch monsters, a room-sized Va**na Dentata, and Killjoy’s Kastle: A Le***an Feminist Haunted House, presented internationally with collaborator Deirdre Logue. Together, Mitchell and Logue run FAR Feminist Artist Residency in rural Ontario. Mitchell is a Professor in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at York University and publishes graphic memoir comics you can find on Substack @ I May Never Answer Your Email and This Is Why.

Hannah Epstein combines textiles and digital media to create characters, immersive environments, and stories that explore contemporary desires and anxieties through a folkloric lens. In her dizzying installation, Plato’s Goon Cave, she stages a slippery allegory of epistemic uncertainty in a media-saturated present.

Plato’s Goon Cave is both a funhouse-mirror inversion of Plato’s allegory, where the cave has become chaotic, fascinating and deeply stimulating, and a logical, if speculative, continuation of the tale. The goons—hulking, but flaccid monsters collectively named after the practice of sustaining a euphoric, trance-like state through prolonged ma********on or other self-soothing, repetitive behaviors—are unchained, complacent, and oddly self-sufficient, goggle-eyed and grinning.
