Did you know? One duty of the Royal Artillery in Halifax during 1869-1871 was ”marching out” once a week, which often included parading at the Citadel and then a route march around Point Pleasant. Other occasions included opening and closing the Legislature, Sunday church parades, “military spectacles”, firing salutes and firing the Citadel’s noon gun.

On the far southern tip of Nova Scotia a Fenian Raid Veteran has finally received a grave marker after being in an unmarked grave since 1941.

This beautiful marker is located in Lower East Pubnico, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia.

No longer forgotten, his marker will be looked after in perpetuity by Veterans Affairs Canada.

One more brought back from obscurity.

Through the Student Guide Program, you could help share and preserve the legacy of Canada’s Veterans at one of Canada’s two national historic sites overseas: the Canadian National Vimy Memorial or the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial.

During WWII, Bedford Basin was where convoys of hundreds of ships would muster before the dangerous crossing to Europe. Today, sailors still gather here to remember them.

This view never gets old. 🌊 Captured around 1924, this picture shows the Halifax Harbour more than 100 years ago! While the skyline has grown and changed, generations of visitors have stood on this very hill to take in the same sweeping harbour views. Proof that some of Halifax’s best views really do stand the test of time. ⚓

HMCS Sackville is proud to support the Dartmouth Yacht Club Convoy Cup Sailpast on Saturday, August 29th!

Each year, recreational sailors depart Bedford Basin carrying the banners of merchant marine and naval vessels lost during the Battle of the Atlantic, re-enacting the historic convoys that served as Europe's lifeline in World War II.

HMCS Sackville will serve as the flagship, where veterans, families, and dignitaries will review the fleet as each vessel renders a salute. The Sailpast commences at 1100, with Admiral McFadden serving as the Reviewing Officer.

We are honoured to be part of this moving tribute linking past to present.

Early in the Second World War, York Redoubt was the "nerve centre" for harbour defences, including an anti-submarine net which stretched across the harbour's entrance from the Redoubt to McNabs Island. York Redoubt remained in military use until 1956.

Today, you can wander among the 200-year-old fortifications while enjoying the panoramic views of Halifax Harbour and the open Atlantic.
