About the Mix:

When I was asked to put this together I knew I wanted to lean towards the more stripped back, minimal spectrum of my sound. With the party and mix series being based out of Montréal, a former home of mine, I reflected a bit on the sound that shaped my taste while living there. It’s where I first came into being an adult, and a q***r person.

Looking where I am now at what I’ve been able to accomplish, it wouldn’t be possible without the incredible highs and lows of being freshly out of closet there where I first came into q***r nightlife.

Recorded using 2 CDJ Nexus-2000’s and a DJM-900, this mix explores minimal house and techno, house, tech house, acid, and breaks.

Underground Love Affair is a monthly mix series spotlighting Canadian q***r DJ and artists from the East Coast & Montreal sharing their favourite underground sounds.
---------------------------------
About the Artist:
is a Montreal based sound artist.
Roaming in the 514 for over a decade, the city’s early bass scene was
their introduction to raves and djing (shout out to ESL CREW).
Rooted in low-frequency and grooves, their sonic psyche explores
the bridges between drippy techno, eccentric bass and lush house.
Conjuring movement-informed selections to a dazzling thirst for
psychedelic textures, they approach the dancefloor as a tool for collective and personal transformation.

About the Mix:
This is a very personal take on sexy, optimistic and delicate dance music.
Fiercefully indulging in my love for minimal house and Kylie Minogue.
Music with expansive grooves for soothing moments of life.
Feeling aligned with my actual vibes.
Serving rolling bass, ethereal matter and pumping synergies!
"Picture yourself in a neon smokey lounge fantaisie,
the touch of light is so soft, your skin feels glowy"
Come for the grooves, stay for the soul…
We could be from the future,
Enjoy xox

We started a new monthly mix series and for the second instalment I requested a mix from Halifax's Jo Riddles.
Check it out below!

Location: Halifax

About the DJ: I’m originally from Montreal, moved to Halifax about a decade ago. I got hooked on house after starting to frequent and work in the q***r clubs through my university years. Started mixing with friends at the after parties and then started to play out. For this mix, I really wanted to intertwine some old with the new and keep the energy high (with a few breathers) and really thought that an absolutely necessary part of the mix was the Celeda Underground vocal given it was at the ULA event.

About the mix: I was definitely heavily influenced in my track choices given that I had just come back from a Defected festival, but also wanted to make sure there were good rhythm and tempo changes along the way to keep it spicy.
The exchange of energy that happens between a crowd and the DJ is just a drug all of its own and the high is that much better when the crowd “gets you” which is why playing a q***r event like ULA was so amazing.

Artist: Shyyy Guyyy
Pronouns: He / Him & They / Them
Location: Montreal

About the Mix:
This mix has a little bit of everything. I've been inspired by a lot of mixes Ive been hearing that genre hop and blend unexpected elements together seamlessly.
It's a dreamy mix of dub, trance, breakbeat and a little house.
When I first envisioned underground love affair as an event I saw it being very dreamy, entrancing and ravey and that's the feeling I hoped to capture with this mix.

About the DJ:
Shyyy Guyyy (Dandi) is a DJ based out of Montréal, Canada. He was the resident DJ of Halifax’s Menz and Mollyz bar until their permanent closure in 2020. Since then he has worked tirelessly within Halifax and now Montréal both playing and promoting shows aimed towards showcasing diverse lineups and multiple genres of underground electronic music. Shhhy Guuuy runs Underground Love Affair, an event and now mix series marrying q***r bodies with underground electronic music.
