The Past, Present, and Future of the Dance

We look to the past for lessons, inspiration, and knowledge.

We ground ourselves in the present in order to feel, to embody, to express.

We turn towards the future with hope, with intention, with open minds.

We find ourselves asking, what's next? Where do we go from here? How do we take the lessons learned in the past, root them in the present, and encourage them to grow in the future. Maybe this means relinquishing control. Maybe this means planting seeds and seeing what happens? Maybe this means starting at the roots? What does this mean to you?

This month's theme is one for the future generations. When we look at so many of the sonic spaces we occupy, there is an obvious exclusion. Where are the kids? A world without youth is one without a future. A community that fails to co-create with the next generation will surely disappear.

Join us for a free, all ages, outdoor event at the Halifax Commons Skate Park.

COMPOST THE RICH

Daylight hours are increasing, the snow has finally melted and we can see earth again. The sun emerges and we feel warmth on our skin, the rain has started to wake up the land.

All the while, the rich and powerful wage a war against life itself. The contrast is staggering.

They bomb schools full of kids, while taking away the rights of bodily autonomy in order to "protect the children". They sink more and more tax money into AI and weapons and extractive technologies that only serve to make them wealthier, while blaming immigrants and the poor for the lack of public resources they created.

We will not submit to a war hungry class of elites who are hell bent on destroying everything in their path. There is no space for billionaires in the world we wish to create. Therefore, there is only one thing thing to do:

COMPOST THE RICH

We will plant flowers in the bones of their decaying empire. We will grow gardens on the lawns of their mansions and share the food with our neighbours. When the fires of their wars have burned to ash, the tips of crocuses will poke their noses through the dust. We have gone through their Winter, let us now embrace our Spring.

Day in and day out we are bombarded with the continual reminder that the state does not actually care about the people. Our government cuts social programs & underfunds the arts while they fund a g3n0c1d3 abroad and increase funding to our own state thugs whose main purpose is to criminalize poverty and target Black & Indigenous communities. We watch as the elite commit atrocities with impunity and politicians flap their jaws with false promises.

We are no longer susceptible to the lies of late stage capitalism, and we refuse to be okay with the crumbs dropped at our feet.

“WE ARE ALL WE HAVE” is a rallying cry to each other - a reminder that our survival depends on us building interdependent systems of care.

We invite you to join us, and each other. Because we are all we have.

We fu**ed up.

It was recently brought to our attention that an image we used on tonight’s event poster was cut from an old photo of racist f***s yelling slurs at children in the Southern states.

This is obviously not the vibe we’re about. At all.

We want to make sure that the media we create is in line with our values. SO — we have placed this nice little sticker over her face to make it clear that we adamantly disagree with her and all other fascist & racist pricks in this world. Fascism is never welcome at our events.

Big thanks to the friend who pointed this out for us. And thank you for holding us accountable.

Jump the Fence is a collective effort because none of us can do this alone. We are a constellation of our own making and the community we build together is alchemic. Collectively we can transmute our reality. Come help us open a portal on the cusp of the shortest night.

Our events are an opportunity to connect, our publications are intentionally sedition. It is integral as artists to remind each other that we have a responsibility to the people who co-create the dance floors we orchestrate. We are here to invoke critical thinking and to spark a dream of something different - something new and something old. This is the push and pull to inject ourselves within a current that has been flowing long before our time.
