Yesterday was a beautiful day but when I stepped outside it became extraordinary! The snow sparkled! It hadn’t looked any different than the day before, from a distance, but out in the midst of the snow in the crisp clean air, there were sparkles everywhere! I had to stop; I had to press pause. If snow is our life, that often feels too loaded down and cumbersome, filled with icy chunks of dirt, we need to pause and give our lives back to the Son. Through Him, we see it is sprinkled with sparkles, blessings, too numerous to count and reminding us, “Brothers and sisters, I do not regard myself as having taken hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Sunshine and shadows
It struck me on my walk today, the impact shadows can make on our journey. Sometimes shadows are a thing of beauty. We welcome them, as relief on a hot, humid day. They bring a coolness that changes our perspective and actually helps revive us and keep us going. They allow moisture to stay in the ground and help plants survive the heat and thrive. But sometimes, when our perspective changes, they are not welcome. They make the air chill, we feel cold! They keep the sun from shining which stunts plants and keeps the green away. There are days that are shrouded in the doom and gloom of shadows made from an overcast sky.. We want to wish them away. Yet we need the rain, the rest from sun.
It’s interesting, this thing called human perspective. Something as simple as a shadow reminds us that we are not the center of the universe; important yes, but not the author and finisher of planet Earth. If we allow our perspective to govern “truth “, is it really truth at all? Is it as fickle as fleeting shadows? Jesus reminds us He is Truth (John 14:6) and that following His truth sets us free beyond our own feeble perspective (John 8:32). “ Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God, my Savior, and my hope is in You….” Psalm 25:5

I love walking at this time of year. It seems like every day there is a new wildflower that appears, tiny, obscure; popping up in seemingly unlikely or uninhabitable places. They are like sweet little reminders that yes, though the winter was harsh and cold, there is hope, spring is coming; better, fruitful days are ahead. That makes me think of the promises of God. If we plant them deep in our hearts, they will pop up at seemingly unlikely and even in uninhabitable times. We need to bury the seeds in summer and those promises will sprout when life’s winter seems to engulf us. “I will never leave you nor forsake you… ““My peace I give you; not as the world gives…” “every GOOD and PERFECT gift is from ABOVE…”, “Though the mountains be shaken….yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken…”, “ to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine…”

Trust, rely, completely count on, lean on and be confident in, the Lord, with all your heart; your whole being, mind, body, soul, spirit and strength. He is the only trustworthy One, the eternal, sovereign, perfect and loving Creator of us. Never lean on or become dependent on your own understanding, insight, rationalizations, reasonings, feelings, ideas or “wisdom”. Instead, in all your plans seek Him, in your thoughts, know His, in your processing make Him your filter, in your activities, recognize His presence and in your accomplishments, give Him credit. Be assured, He will direct you. He will remove stumbling blocks, smooth out, orchestrate, intervene and straighten our paths and show us which of life’s purposes to pursue on the roads and pathways ahead; this is our future with Jesus Christ.
