I first became familiar with the fantastic artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby, who just painted the portrait of the Obamas, in the fabulous film The Price of Everything. I’ve watched it at least 6 times.

I cannot recommend it too highly. It’s about the commoditization of art.

Saw an ad this a.m. for a Clyde Aspevig video saying ‘see less, design more’. Yes!
Then coincidentally I turned to photos over the years to find a reference for this week. Ran into this right away. It was my first breakthrough painting, won some prizes. And why? Because I saw less, designed more. Eye path, points of interest etc.
I do this every painting now but maybe not explicitly with pen. I’m start with more chaos than then. But even then, when I start to make sense of my chaotic ground layer I design it with exactly this in my mind.

Regarding the painting I just posted…which really was to capture the mood of that early sunset moment in March.

Compositionally, the original NOTAN (first one) of the reference wasn’t that interesting. It was top heavy and divided in half. I wanted to lower the horizon a bit to enlarge the sky to play up the light, and add pull more gesture towards the bottom for more rhythm and balance.

Second NOTAN is of the finished painting. I feel I achieved my goal.

So I’ve had to start another one. A show deadline I forgot. The one I started yesterday is too large. This 42x42.
I should have kept my recent one back from the gallery.
Oh well.
